The only shooting I'm doing in that scenario is with a camera. If the perps try to kick down the door to escape the authorities, on the other hand...

Dial double zero for Winchester.

back then, I could scare hell out of a few groundhogs from a couple hundred yards, some funny stories about them too.....

I thought that too.

Some people here aren't understanding the question asking would "you"? and not about some random person none of us knows. I personally would have to help the police somehow but I don't own a gun and sure don't have enough experience shooting one to be able to say confidently I could take them out. I could help distract them though so the police could move in faster.

I am not as eloquent as some here but I am going to try anyway. In summary, here would be my thought process for getting involved in a situation like this.
  • First, do I have enough information to make an informed decision? If no... don't act.

  • Will my actions help or be reasonably expected to help protect the lives or safety of others? In other words if I do nothing, are others likely to be harmed?

  • If LEOs are involved already (as they were here) are they in a position to handle it by themselves? If yes... don't act. Keep alert and maintain tactical advantage in case situation changes.

  • Can I act without exposing loved ones to potential danger? This isn't black and white... evaluate accordingly. In this case, it would have been yes.

  • If I act, will I put myself in danger from police who don't know who I am? In this case with the cover provided by the house with concurrent phone call, you could avoid that.

  • Am I capable of taking action and having a positive result (as opposed to confusing the situation and actually causing more harm)?

  • Can I live with the possible consequences of my actions? Bodily harm, legal ramifications, etc. (Is it worth it?)
FINALLY, and the trump card to all of the others...

Am I (or my loved ones) personally in danger?

If yes... take action. Period.

In this case, you have 2 men who have already proven capable of killing indiscriminately using fairly destructive explosive devices shooting guns at people 50 feet from my house. On top of that, there is also a volley of fire coming from the other direction from police... I think I could make a hell of a case that I feared for my life whether they are aiming specifically at me or not. As shown in the aftermath, there were multiple houses and cars hit by gunfire. The police were most likely scared and running on adrenaline. They were shooting at targets behind cars from 80 yards away with what I assume were pistols. At that range, in that environment, you can't guarantee that THEY aren't going to be shooting up into your house with an errant shot, much less the suspects.

I don't think of myself as some vigilante running around trying to get involved in police matters. I am not wandering around the cities armed looking for bad guys to shoot. I personally hope I never again see what a gunshot wound looks like first hand. However, very rarely, a situation arises where I believe the citizens have a responsibility to step up and help their fellow man and I believe that this situation meets those criteria.

If anybody is in disagreement, I can fully respect that position.

Oh... and for all of the black rifle haters, this is what would be used.

That one is pretty much an off the shelf Colt 6920MP (MP = Magpul). Only things added are the Aimpoint PRO optic, front grip, and the dust cover to piss off the haters.

if my wife would like to back me up, the .270 wby mag in the back shoots just as well.

.62 groups at 100 yards with a .300 win mag makes for an effective "stopper"

I have been doing some part swapping including some scopes... at the moment I am iron sight only with everything bigger than the 5.56 or I might pick something with a little more power as well.

Granted, with multiple armed targets at pretty close range, I think quickness would be key which gives some advantage to the M4. With 75gr Hornady FPD TAP rounds, it should have more than sufficient stopping power.

Despite what the media portrays, we don't need to be told by them when to get our guns. Those of us with them had them, when SWAT rolled through doing house to house checks, they secured firearms, swept the house, and returned them. Not everything makes the news. There is way more going on than what has hit the papers/news stations. As far as the OP, it's a tough call as a private citizen, but if they had tried to enter my home, I would have done whatever was necessary to protect my family.

At that particular point in time, in the dark, how do you know that it's the bombing suspects outside your window? Seems as though the question would need to be expanded to the generic situation of a shootout with police.

Anyone shooting outside of my house is a threat to me and my family. I don't GAF what the situation is.

I would have grabbed my .300 blackout and a supressor. I would have fixed them so that they are not shooting anymore. Not saying I would have killed them, but I would have made it so that neither one of them would be shooting again.

In Texas, I would be fine.

I think any question in this specific case would have been answered when they blew up a bomb in the street...

As for a "generic" shootout, see post 45.
