Default NASA Lunar lander lands on it's side.

HOW??
We've sent many landers to Mars with "rovers" as well. Everything worked as planned.
Yet we have simple Lunar landers landing upside down (Japan) and our own Lunar lander landing on it's side.
WTF?
Yet we put humans there "upright" in 1969.....

Because it's hard. And these have been the Walmart quality versions. On the cheap because they are trying to make money.

Remember when Elon was throwing darts into the ocean? He still does once in awhile.

NASA didn’t build it or fly it. It was the first attempt by that company. Not shocking their first attempt failed.

They should have tried to land somewhere closer for their first attempt. Like Nebraska.

NASA sent it there.
NASA was "involved".
Otherwise, WTF is it even being spoken of first hand on the NASA.gov website?

NASA provided funding. It was built and flown by a private company and it was their first attempt.

Not to be a Devil's advocate, but what GOV agency didn't / doesn't have it's mitts all over something?

MHO still stands.

Why land the way you are supposed to when you can land the way you want? Who are we to assign a 'correct' landing position?

How hard can this be? We did it over 50 years ago with computers significantly less powerful than your average phone. And quite a few side rulers.

Lack of dedication? Quality? Testing?

We have not been "all in" on space programs since the early 90's across the board. They are expensive and the .gov has completely f'ed up the acquisition process such that almost every award is lowest bid, that has even a low expectancy of being on time and under budget.

First, there is good and bad news. Go look at what we are paying for Falcons vs. the freaking Atlas/Delta line. So, in a sense, the strategy has worked fabulously in the launch vehicle sector and is now as vibrant as I've ever seen. Chalk this up to a long and difficult effort, and really deep pockets of an owner who somehow knew he would prevail in the market at some point.

The bad is that to pursue this strategy, you need to accept failures as just part of the strategy and factor the losses in the plan. You can't do that with safety, and it gets really weird for "human rated" equipment. So, everything we put on the STS was at MINIMUM 3 failures deep for anything that even sniffed of affecting the crew. At the end of my career, we were putting what amounted to be cool science projects in orbit because access became a cheap commodity. Single string, 75% probability of success. Far from the 99.9%, what we called three 9's on the stuff we built into the 90's.

tl;dr - Yes, there has been a great change.

if Neil Armstrong was piloting that craft... it would of had a perfect touchdown.

But manned missions cost twice as much because... because there's always a return mission.

As I recall our 1st lunar landing , the pilot had to take over from the computer and landed it manually.

...and it was the same issue. Not the sink rate, the lateral velocity.
