Always like biking when I was younger, and there was usually someplace to go (trail, path, ice cream shop, etc.). Now a bit older & living in the country, where the closest bike path is about 9 miles away, so we decided to buy a couple of those ebike thingies. Pedal as usual to get your exercise, but a bit of assistance is there when needed for hills & headwinds. We're fair-weather bikers, so still have a few weeks to wait yet.

At 73 with type 2 diabetes, cycling is my main physical activity. Mrs. and I ride every day weather permits and log 400-500 miles/month. Sooner or later, law of averages catches up. Large GSD ran in front of me today causing a crash - no endo, but right shoulder and helmet took a jolt.

Dog owner came rushing out and gave me a camp chair to sit on until the cobwebs cleared, Garmin bike computer texted my wife and 2 daughters advising of crash and location. Trip to urgent care, referral to ER and several x-rays and C/T scans showed no breaks of brain bleeds.

Lessons learned:

You can’t always avoid the dogs.
Cycling computers are worth their cost
If you go to the ER with a level II trauma, you go to the head of the line
Cycling boo boos are expensive.

Ok, Iwill post my personal gripe about people riding bikes.
We live in an area that a lot of people come to for vacation. They rent bikes and ride around on the dedicated bike trails…BUT they don’t ****ing stop when the trail crosses a roadway even though there are stop signs on the bike trail. I have almost hit these idiots several times over the years. Just this week I had a bike rider flip me off as he ran through a crossing he was supposed to stop at.
Most local bikers know the rules but you can usually tell the vacationers on the rental bikes

Well, slow down and watch for bicyclists

P.S. I would've flipped you off too.

Agreed, I ride 10 miles a day and I see bikers put themselves at risk everyday. I've been knocked off my bike 3 times in the last 10 years or so and eventually you learn the cars are bigger.

Ouch... Need some disc brakes on your machine.

I have more scars from riding than probably anything else

Although I haven't seen them in several years, there used to be a bunch of "wine and cheese" types in their fancy riding clothes that would come down from the city on Saturdays and plug up our rural roads.

They would take the whole lane up and would NOT move over. Lotta hills and curves around here, so not so easy to go around the assholes. Sometimes when I got the chance I would go around, but purposely very close to them. Also did it with my loud Harley. The law here says if you can't keep up with the flow of traffic (pedestrians, bicycles, horses) you must keep to the right -- so **** them.

They're probably staying in the city cuz they're scared of Covid.

Not really they invade my lake every year. Have seen a lot and basically have no use for those Lance Armstrong wannabees with those upside down bed pans tied to their heads. They come up in large groups from the city!

Complain about they also have the right to be on the road but run stop and yield signs frequently and other transgressions.

Uhhhhh, no. Disc brakes are good for off-road bikes where the rim clincher type of brakes can get mudded up and not work. Road bikes stop faster with rim clinchers than discs, simply because the entire wheel is now your disc brake.

Well, I sold the last of my parts and hard tail frame I was building this weekend. That's the last of the bikes for me for a while.

I have both, and while well set-up rim brakes work well, disc brakes don't wear the rim, provide consistent braking, better modulation, not affected by out of true wheels, improved wet braking performance, less impacted by dirt/mud. They also have more stopping power, have greater mechanical advantage, no tire width limitations, reduced stopping distance, the pads last longer, are easier to set up, take less maintenance and are usually quieter.

I also have bikes with both set ups, prefer the disc brakes. I only ride on the road and a few light trails in the area and feel I get a much better response. The only downside for me is the disc brakes are not as good in cold weather when temps are in the 30's. They can get a little vague.
