Egyptian military deploys in Cairo under curfew.
Ruling party HQ ablaze; protesters climb on tanks in Suez; Nobel Prize winner under house arrest

Breaking News, Weather, Business, Health, Entertainment, Sports, Politics, Travel, Science, Technology, Local, US & World News - msnbc.com

CAIRO — Shots were heard in central Cairo on Friday after military units moved in to quell an "open revolt" against President Hosni Mubarak's 30-year rule by tens of thousands of protesters.

Demonstrators were trying to storm the foreign ministry and the state TV building in Cairo, The Associated Press reported. Violent clashes were also reported near the Egyptian parliament.

Television images showed several buildings in Cairo, including the headquarters of the ruling party, ablaze. Flames also threatened the Egyptian National Museum.

Friday saw demonstrations across the country, which continued despite a 13-hour military curfew which began at 6 p.m. local time (11 a.m. ET). It initially covered the cities of Cairo, Suez and Alexandria, but was later extended to cover all cities.

Been waiting for this to get here. That other place is much more on the ball.

My take:

It's interesting to note that freedom and liberty loving America has been sending foreign aid to the very government those protesters are protesting against. IOW, we are supporting that dictatorship rather than the people yearning to be free.

To make matters worse, we wanted to subjugate the Egyptian people so much that we borrowed money from China to give to the Egyptian government to subjugate the Egyptian people.

Think about that. You have a hard on for someone else so bad that you go to the bank to borrow money to give to the people subjugating the person you hate.

And we wonder why people hate us.

They are backing Obama, they just can't seem to say it out loud. They are agreeing that we are right to borrow money to help the Egyptian government subjugate its people. Obama went along with that, but they still can't seem to say they agree with Obama for continuing to give our borrowed money to the Egyptian government. It must be hard for them.

Why do you keep ignoring the obvious? I am not a Republican, nor a "conservative". See my avatar.

We should have never gotten involved in the Middle East, except as buyers of their oil, in the course of international commerce. That means we shouldn't have helped install the Shah in Iran, we shouldn't have helped Israel, other than possibly for a few years following 1948, we shouldn't have backed Iraq against Iran, and we shouldn't have assisted Kuwait when Iraq invaded them. Also, we shouldn't have any troops stationed in Saudi Arabia.

Hope this clears things up for you.

Cliffs: Stay out of other people's business, unless they harm you first.

We got directly involved in the Middle East back in 1975 after Viet Nam fell ... when Nixon started paying the Saudi's billions in subsides and military hardware so Middle East oil wouldn't fall into the the Soviet orbit ... I believe this was called the 'Anglo-American Alignment in the Persian Gulf and Arabian Peninsula' ... a conspiracy theory at the time ...

We were involved way before that. We got involved when England ceded Palestine to the new Jewish state of Israel. We funded running the indigenous people out of the new state of Israel, and have been funding that government ever since. Over 60 years of US taxpayer dollars going to Israel, and never once did we miss a payment. Not once.

You also failed to mention Operation Ajax, when we helped bring the Shah of Iran to power when the previously democratically elected leader was threatening to nationalize their oil industry.

And of course, the most obvious:

You failed to mention why we are paying off Egypt each year with foreign aid to begin with: we are paying the Egyptian government to make nice with Israel. That's what the Camp David Accords with Jimmy Carter were all about. Sadat and Begin got the Nobel Peace Prize, and the US taxpayer got stuck with the bill, year after year.

WTF? Let the Israeli government pay for peace, if it means so much to them. Why should I have to pay? I live in America. I pay enough taxes.

Ask Wolfowitz why he lied. I knew it was a lie the first time I heard "the Iraq war will pay for itself".

Default Cairo's Garbage City

Incredible ‘Garbage City’ Rises Outside of Cairo

Today

Incredible 'Garbage City' Rises Outside of Cairo | Inhabitat - Green Design Will Save the World

This unbelievable city piled high with trash is a real place called Garbage City, outside of Cairo in Egypt.
It’s populated by a community of workers called Zabbaleen, who personally collect, sort, reuse, resell or otherwise repurpose Cairo’s waste.

Recently several photographers have trained their cameras upon the city, and now we see what it would really be like to live in the aftermath of our own consumption.

So here we are, on our green design blog, talking about confonting the waste produced by modern consumptive habits, reduce, reuse, get a pop-top purse, etcetera, and suddenly this photo shows up.

This oddly fascinating metropolis is actually a very efficient waste management system: food scraps are fed to livestock, what can be repaired is, and everything else is recycled, sold for scrap, or burned for fuel.

The Zabbaleen live at poverty levels but live a long-held tradition of scavenging as skill.

Not surprisignly, many photographers have become facinated with the community.

Fear Extreme Islamists in the Arab World? Blame Washington
By Jeff Cohen
January 29, 2011
* Fear Extreme Islamists in the Arab World? Blame Washington :***** Information Clearing House: ICH

In the last year of his life, Martin Luther King Jr. questioned U.S. military interventions against progressive movements in the Third World by invoking a JFK quote: "Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable."

Were he alive to witness the last three decades of U.S. foreign policy, King might update that quote by noting: "Those who make secular revolution impossible will make extreme Islamist revolution inevitable."

For decades beginning during the Cold War, U.S. policy in the Islamic world has been aimed at suppressing secular reformist and leftist movements. Beginning with the CIA-engineered coup against a secular democratic reform government in Iran in 1953 (it was about oil), Washington has propped up dictators, coaching these regimes in the black arts of torture and mayhem against secular liberals and the left.

In these dictatorships, often the only places where people had freedom to meet and organize were mosques -- and out of these mosques sometimes grew extreme Islamist movements. The Shah's torture state in Iran was brilliant at cleansing and murdering the left - a process that helped the rise of the Khomeini movement and ultimately Iran's Islamic Republic.

Growing out of what M.L. King called Washington's "irrational, obsessive anti-communism," U.S. foreign policy also backed extreme Islamists over secular movements or government that were either Soviet-allied or feared to be.

In Afghanistan, beginning before the Soviet invasion and evolving into the biggest CIA covert operation of the 1980s, the U.S. armed and trained native mujahedeen fighters -- some of whom went on to form the Taliban. To aid the mujahedeen, the U.S. recruited and brought to Afghanistan religious fanatics from the Arab world -- some of whom went on to form Al Qaeda. (Like these Washington geniuses, Israeli intelligence -- in a divide-and-conquer scheme aimed at combating secular leftist Palestinians -- covertly funded Islamist militants in the occupied territories who we now know as Hamas.)

Most of this is not obscure history.

Except in U.S. mainstream media.

One of the mantras on U.S. television news all day Friday was: Be fearful of the democratic uprisings against U.S. allies in Egypt (and Tunisia and elsewhere). After all, we were told by Fox News and CNN and Chris Matthews on MSNBC, it could end up as bad as when "our ally" in Iran was overthrown and the extremists came to power in 1979.

Such talk comes easy in U.S. media where Egyptian victims of rape and torture in Mubarak's jails are never seen. Where it's rarely emphasized that weapons of repression used against Egyptian demonstrators are paid for by U.S. taxpayers. Where Mubarak is almost always called "president" and almost never "dictator" (unlike the elected president of Venezuela).

When U.S. media glibly talk about the Egyptian and Tunisian "presidents" being valued "allies in the war on terror," it's no surprise they offer no details about the prisoners the U.S. has renditioned to these "pro-Western" countries for torture.

The truth is that no one knows how these uprisings will end.

But revolution of some kind, as King said, seems inevitable. Washington's corrupt Arab dictators will come down as surely (yet more organically) as that statue of Saddam, another former U.S.-ally.

If Washington took its heel off the Arab people and ended its embrace of the dictators, that could help secularists and democrats win hearts and minds against extreme Islamists.

Democracy is a great idea. Too bad it plays almost no role in U.S. foreign policy.

Jeff Cohen is the director of the Park Center for Independent Media at Ithaca College, founder of the media watch group FAIR, and boardmember of the new online action group RootsAction.org.
