While i am glad to see you are not in favor of urinating on our 2nd Amendment, that example is not accurate. We do not have a benefit program giving arms to those who cannot afford them.

A quick search revealed too many stories and articles to choose from and I certainly could not post them all here. I have received this info straight from investigators working to get the money back.

Thank you for your service.

While I agree the example isn't the greatest, you missed my point. I am trying to find out why you're in favor of defunding a program that genuinely helps people that have fallen on hard times just because a few people abuse it. My example was just to point out that there are bad people that abuse the system but that doesn't mean the system should be dissolved. Maybe we could just regulate better. Thoughts?

It is far from being abused by just a few people. That system is broken, isn't doing what it is intended to do and is supporting such a large percentage of people that is unreal and unsustainable. I am not saying it should be dissolved.

Do you think 'most' people abuse it? If you don't want to dissolve it then why are you in favor of defunding it? I'm really just curious and I am well aware that I haven't listed any solutions to the abuse issue. I just don't think defunding a program like this one should be high on the priority list and it certainly shouldn't be celebrated.

Yes, I do think that most people abuse it. The usage has nearly doubled since 2008--and those were 2012 stats so I bet we are well beyond doubled at this point. That much of our country does not and should not be living in poverty.

I think you're suffering from a case of confirmation bias. I don't think most people abuse it. The rates have increased because unemployment was at an all time high. Yes, thankfully we are recovering now and some people that are eligible now are expected to become inelligible once the unemployment rates drops more. Fact is 91% of the benefits were received by households that were at or below the poverty line. I think all defunding will do is hurt the people that actually need it. Taking money from the program doesn't eliminate the idiots but luckily the idiots aren't the majority like you seem to think.

Well I think practically every single person on the program abuses it. They abuse it by using it as a crutch to not earn a living using any means possible. They abuse it by selling their EBT cards for cash (like 50 cents on the dollar) and buying drugs. They abuse it by becoming dependent on taxpayers. They abuse it for years on end. It's a program built for abuse, by politicians who reap rewards by creating a dependent class. They abuse the shit out of it, and it's so bad now we've pretty much crossed the Rubicon.

That's abuse.

Anyway, the OP doesn't want to discuss any issue involving the utter failure of liberal policies and specifically the ones foisted upon American by Obama. That's why he is gloating over a pope, one that just defrocked and excommunicated a priest for supporting gay marriage. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

I never said people don't abuse it, I just don't think it's anywhere near most. I asked you to prove to me ( since you're the one making the positive assertion) that most people abuse it and you didn't.

Lastly no need to get snippy, I'm an atheist and don't like the Pope either. But I agree that the OP seems not to discuss the topic.

Thanks for actually discussing the topic though. No one else seems to want to do that

I'm not looking to debate, I'm just stating a fact that's more significant than anything in that article.

Nothing, I'm just pointing out there are more important things to worry about. The Pope's being nice to people, good for him, that's kind of his job.

I guess I don't understand why someone would comment on a discussion thread without wanting to add something to the discussion. To each their own, from now on I'll ignore all posts that don't add to the discussion. Thanks for the honesty.

More than half is most. I would be shocked if more than half of the the recipients were NOT abusing it.

Well, I'd respond but why? Just for instance, you mention the high unemployment rate being a reason the food stamp program has reached record levels. It's actually the shrinking labor participation rate, and it's all part of the fundamental transformation of America brought to you by Democrats of the Obama Voting Ilk.

It's important to understand the underlying reasons things happen. I'm so done trying to explain why things are screwed up, really, I am. If you can't see it, sorry, but you may be part of the problem. I expect people to be up to speed on things here.

I want to dissolve it. It is not a power of the federal government enumerated in the Constitution or Bill of Rights. If anyone should want to have welfare, it should be up to the individual states to decide for themselves. Read the 10th Amendment for further details.
