There are people who have been administering this system well over several administrations.

If this was POTUS problem; then several POTUS could have resolved it.

No I’m saying, President Obama didn’t walk into the Oval Office; Wednesday January 21st 2009 and say, let’s start a campaign to double the number of people volunteering to walk into the a Government office to apply for Food Stamps. BTW, all that stuff that has been going on for the last several months (May 2008 – December 2008) has zero barring on applications for the New Year.

Yea … let just ignore all those insignificant events prior to Inauguration Day.

How about this, yea it's President Obama's fault, and move forward.

Works for me and should make you feel better also.

Your naivety knows no bounds.

Obama, via the minions of his in the 110/111 Congress set out to do exactly this.

Oh, they did not say 'old Joe over there needs food stamps' - no, they screwed with the economy, ON PURPOSE, so it FORCED old Joe to go on food stamps.

And before you ask 'how' take a close look at the 110/111 Congress actions regarding housing, paying for private industry with US taxpayer money, bailing out Gold/Sacs with billions to cover their short loss, spending ~a trillion dollars for nothing, etc.

Get back to me ONLY if you can discuss the economic actions of those Congresses - otherwise you are not worth my time.

welfare is fine. I'm a fan of private welfare...but not opposed to a government safety net for some.

currently, our welfare is not a safety net...it is a lifestyle.

100% Right on.

I have no problem with a government run system for those who truly need TEMPORARY help for some reason. I also believe there should be very specific things attached to that money and very specific reasons to qualify for it.

#1: Clinton fought against balanced budgets tooth and nail, the Newt Gingrich led house left us with a balanced budget.

#2. Laments war spending while conveniently omitting the MUCH larger, out of control SOCIAL WELFARE spending problem. in FACT, even in the latest budget, with revenues very low amidst a horrible recession, and a NEW RECORD HIGH in defense spending, we ACTUALLY have a basically balanced budget on the DISCRETIONARY side:

Individual and Corporate Income Taxes = $1.4 Trillion in revenue.

Non defense and defense spending = $1.4 Trillion in costs.

Result: ~Break Even

Payroll Taxes = $935 Billion

Social Security/Medicare Expenditures = at HELL of a lot more than that

Result = In the RED.

Budget Would Raise Tax Rates on Wealthy, Limit Deductions - WSJ.com

#3: Still relying on old DISPROVEN cbo PROJECTIONS that the Bush tax cuts would hurt revenue. WRONG. Bush INHERITED a recession and INHERITED declining revenues. And in fact at first followed the same brain-dead measures the Obama admin. has, using small tax cut packages centered around credits. Then in 2003 the Bush admin. finally pulled their collective heads out of their asses and passed the Jobs and Growth Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2003

As you can see here, it was not until REPUBLICANS took over congress and passed some tax cuts and that we got a nice double digit revenue growth boom in the LATE 1990s after the Democrats lost control of congress and Clinton became toothless due to Congressional opposition and personal sexual scandal.

And yet again in 2003, we passed a GOOD tax cut package, which went into effect in 2004, and thus spurred tax revenue which was collected for 2004 in April of 2005 (for those of us on time that is) back into double digit growth during the 2000s expansion.

Just to revisit this....

Phil... you cannot legislate empathy or generosity.

I am a selfish and unsympathetic man. I do not care much about others. I never will. My feeling is always, "Those who can take care of themselves, do; those who can't, shut up and get out of the way of those who can."

You will never be able to change this in my personality, and in the personality of people like me. I cannot stand having the resources *I* produced, the resources *I* worked for, taken from me forcefully, and given to someone less able, by taxation and incredibly inefficient redistribution.

End ALL government social support programs, right now, forever. Get RID of the public dole. Charity should, always and only, be (1) Local and (2) Voluntary.

Nietzscheans FTW!

Criticism of tax cuts rings kind of hollow when you consider the fact that, if we had simply maintained responsible levels of spending this past decade, we would have had surpluses EVERY SINGLE YEAR, even during RECESSION years, with NO need to REDUCE the levels of spending we were at relative to our economy.

Tax receipts in 2007 (after the Bush tax cuts) were 25% higher than tax receipts in 2000 (before the Bush tax cuts).

And the total receipts in 2007 were enough to cover 100% of the spending in any year prior to 2006.

Bush's tax cuts increased tax revenue by more than the inflation percentage.

The problem was spending, which increased by over 50% in the same period.
