Default Matresses again....serious this time....

I was going to post this a couple daze ago, but spotted the other threads, so put it off.....

Wife and I suffer lo back pain, for me it's terminal, she uses one of them ALEVE electro shock pad things to help her, but I would need a dozen of them because of the extent of arthritis....

years ago we bought a pillow top mattress and it's a mess now with divots where we sleep, and of course it's can't be flipped, supposedly....so we have never tried....

I went to one of them 'My Pillow' things, and have to admit the additional support does help with the sore shoulders from sleeping on my side...but no cure....

SO, we finally found a place here after 3-4 attempts that actually sells flipable innerspring style, like made decades ago.....I went to the store Monday and so we have to go back and see IF, and they have to order it anyway...2 weeks....store credit if we need return it....better than nothing, they haul the old POS away too....THE question is, what are you older folks experiences with this painful/sensitive topic??

Decades ago I had a Simmons Beautyrest and wish the hell I never got rid of it....but it went for a water bed that I kept at 90f for a couple winters....down here in FLORIDA not needed so the pillow top crap.....

the failure is in the "pillow topping" . Either don't purchase a pillow top type mattress... or buy one that has a replaceable top.

The air adjustable mattress we last bought (I think it's a Sleep Number type) has a replaceable top; one long zipper all around the perimeter of the mattress. Easy to replace just that part.

How do you like that Sleep Number?
Is it worth the cost?
They sure do hype it a lot on TV.

I bought a sleepnumber a few years ago, best bed I've ever slept in, and i have 2 herniated discs in my neck and 2 bulging in my back.

Get the king with dual chambers, 1 on each side, so that you and your wife can adjust your side independently.

I wasn't having any issues with our past two or ten mattresses; it was Yvonne that kept complaining.

The sleep number is just as good to me as the previous ones; I picked a pressure number... it's been sitting there for over a year; never readjusted it on my side. It is kinda nice that the topper is easily replaceable.

I don't understand why people have such a hard time with mattress buying.

Forget all that foam mattress bullshit. They sleep hot, and offer no support. Guess what, "conforming" to your body is not helping your back, neck, or anything else. It just feels comfortable when you lay down. When you get up in the morning, you hurt.

The good old spring coil mattress is all a person needs.

Go out and get a name brand, middle of the line, HEAVY gauge coil mattress. If you want a pillow top, fine. You will have a few inches of foam on top of a spring mattress for comfort.

Here is the secret.............. Buy the one that feels best for you and after 3 years, THROW IT THE **** OUT!

I don't care what brand it is, after several years it will start breaking down, both in the foam top and the spring strength.

We just got a Serta Perfect Sleep FIRM (which gives you heavy coils) Pillow Top (which gives you comfort). Went into a Mattress Gallery store, found the one we both liked, went into another room, looked it up online and offered the guy the online price. He of course, said yes. Just under $800 for Queen and we have a platform I built long ago that you could park a truck on, so no need for their cheap ass foundation (another important need is a STURDY foundation).

We will use it for a few years, throw it out, rinse and repeat. In this manner, it costs us less than $275 a year if we use it for 3 years. Can't beat that with a stick and is comfortable as shit until the day we get a new one.

Pretty simple, huh?

And yes, I have lower back issues and have had spine surgery, so I feel your pain (well, not when I am sleeping )

We had a vey expensive pillow top and I hated it.
We went the Gene route and bought the cheapest regular mattress that we could find, and it's great.
Personally, I think that mattress sellers are like used car salesmen.
They'll upsell you to as much as you'll believe their BS.
Don't believe the hype.

My wife really wants us to get the type of bed that lets you elevate either side independently of each other. Sleep Number, among others, makes those, but I like our current bed just fine. She'll probably win on this one.

Bought a Sleep Number queen with two separate air mattresses and dual air controls. Best bed we've
ever had ...until 2 yrs later when my mattress was almost flat by morning. Pumped it up at night and
gone in AM!

I proved no leaks in the air bag or hose, but the leak was in the controller unit under the bed. The valve
in the pump was leaking all night long. Sleep Number wouldn't cover it as it was a two year warranty.
So I put in a ball valve between the pump and the mattress. Open the valve to pump or bleed to the
right pressure then close the ball valve!

It's been working fine for the next 10 years! Although I have to use the ball valve to adjust it, I was NOT
going to pay those pricks for a new controller!

Sleep Number: Great bed but crappy warranty! Especially with the new models, restrictions and CYA's
all through the warranty...

Oh yeah, crappy pump valve design too!

We're going on Year 8 of my Wal-Mart.com Queen size mattress I paid around $270 for.

It's awesome.

My parents have two different guest rooms with $1,000+ mattresses and I can only visit them for 2 nights because after that my back is WRECKED from either guest bed.

We bought our son a $250 mattress from Amazon that is made in America. Arctic Dreams 10" Cooling Gel Mattress. It's really good too. Probably going with that brand once we move and upgrade to a king size bed. Not all foam mattresses are bad/lacking in firmness and support.

Buy online and do your homework/read reviews.

That's right about where I thought you were age-wise.
Tim thought you were another one of the crypt keepers around here?

I think mattresses are like audio to some degree and you have to find what's good for you.

Personally I HATE the Sleep number and think it's an overpriced air mattress that doesn't truly offer proper support for the spine or shoulder area.
I owned the Cali King version with the pad topper, quiet pumps etc and it seemed great at the time but I now realize I was coming from an awful spring mattress.

My pick, that works for me, is the Serta iComfort beds. It's a gel infused memory foam that offers excellent support and cradles my body with equal support everywhere.
Gel keeps it from getting hot; or getting stiff when it's cold.

I've also slept on some spring mattresses that were outstanding and very comfortable.

I've known a couple of people that have that same mattress, and they said in almost exact words what you said. Must be something to it....
