As a former Director of Operations and Logistics responsible for the production and import of all Polaroid product I can tell you this is absolutely true. I could have a camera built and pay all the expense of getting them imported into the US and still be half the cost of anything built in the US.

China is the extreme just as the US the extreme in the other direction. The answer is somewhere in between.

Obama, at one point, asked Steve Jobs why they build their products in China and not the US. And this is his answer.

There's a lot to it, but it mainly comes down to the fact that they really can't manufacture their products in the US.
I'll give this a read for sure. I gotta wrestle dogs tonight.

So let me ask you a question.

Would you prefer no environmental restrictions on manufacturers or what we have today?

You are too young to remember what it was like just 30 years ago or so. When I first moved to Jacksonville, the paper plant there put up so much air pollution, I had to carry around an inhaler.

We use to dump so much shit in the water that one of the major rivers flowing into the great lakes actually caught fire.

Thats right, the Cuyahoga River that flows through Cleveland actually caught fire. Several times.

So what is the solution? Do we let people pollute the planet or do we perhaps impose sanctions on products not produced to our environmental standards?

You think just because the USA regulated industry out of the country means it doesn't happen? No, it just means those processes rather than being reasonably controlled, are still completely uncontrolled in another country. That helps nobody, but the hippies in the US sleep better, that whole out of sight out of mind thing.

There certainly needs to be a balance on how we regulate an industry, as well as a better balance with our trade agreements, regarding this.

Poodles are great dogs. A lot of guys give them a bum rap because of the clip. That's not so, they're very smart and plenty sturdy.

OK Chris Fowler I read your link. Pretty interesting.

Can we do what the Cinese did with the iPhone? Sure. We have the resources to pull that off. GETTING THEM TO IS THE ISSUE.

Call 1000 American workers at 3:00am and tell them to get down to the plant and assemble phones and you'll get 1000 variations of "Fuk you"

I do think their working conditions are lacking a bit however.

Having visited the factories building our cameras I can assure you that is not the case.

But we cannot match the price.

Working conditions in China suck. The government tilts the field. And for all that, the cost is way lower than it could be done in the US. They could not build their products in the US and compete.

Is it fair? Is it right? Nope...but it's reality.

I've seen plants in China that rival the best in America with plants that rival 1800s child labor sweat shops right next door.

The contrast is crazy. Some are good, but it is definitely not all of them.

I'm sure that's true, but the factories we dealt with were state of the art operations, very impressive.

I have dealt more with the raw materials and machining operations. That definitely explains the difference...

It all depends on the standards they are operating under. All of our product had to meet ISO standards of manufacture. You can't do that in a sweat shop or with child/unskilled labor.

SO, I imagine that the news shots shown around are all tightly controlled propaganda, because the joint seems clean on the streets, people dressed as well has here, don't seem filthy or starving......

what are YOUR observations about that???
