Default Train geek is made happy

New crossing in Lancaster

[Geek]The train in the picture in this article is the first one to move in revenue service over a new crossover on our railroad, the Lancaster & Chester.

The new crossover is lined out in green on the below picture, with the old one in red. The old crossover did not have signals, and since the oncoming traffic in both directions had blind approaches (see the ground level views) we had to have a "Stop & Flag" order in place. (The train had to come to a complete stop, the conductor had to walk out in front of it and stop traffic, then the train went through at walking speed.) The new crossover avoids the blind approaches and has signals, allowing the train to go through at about 5 mph without stopping. [/Geek]

Too many people get smushed at the old location?

Probably a stupid question for the OP but did you ever hop a train when you were a kid? I did. Great fun. Made me feel like bad ass rebel. Ride in an empty boxcar for a while until the damn conductor poured the coals to the engine and you COULDN'T jump back off.

Fortunately the stop & flag order worked as it should and we haven't hit anyone there since we bought that railroad. That being said, it did gum up the works a lot and cost us a lot in fuel every time we had to stop a train and start it again.

No, Dad put a healthy respect for trains very high on the agenda in our household.

I personally only have heard of it on YouTube, only because by dumb luck I came across a link where they have dedicated cameras in my home town. LOL. Waiting on those trains when late for school/work was never a joy lol.

A Baller railroad would have installed a grade-separated viaduct.

but don't be a dork and only have 12'-4" of clearance under your tracks...that would be bad.

(it was 11-8, but they added 8" last year)

One of the neighborhood kids ended up tearing his damn arm off hopping a train. I wasn’t with him but that pretty much ended the train hopping for all of us.

The boxcars had these strips of perforated metal hanging on the side wall. We take them, fold them in half and make whistles from them.

how do the economics of trains work?

if you own the rolling stock, you can charge others for carrying their stuffs?

if you own the rails, you can charge others for using your rails?

assuming both are true, how are the fees determined? Dollars per mile, per ton, per mile*ton?

and then after paying to keep up your rolling stock and the rails, the rest is leftover for haircuts?
