Given that there is basically zero content available...
they build it anyway
Samsung’s first 8K TV goes on sale next month Samsung is announcing its first commercial 8K TV, the Q900R, at IFA 2018 this week. The QLED panel will be available in 65-inch, 75-inch, 82-inch, and 85-inch sizes, and is capable of peak brightness of 4,000 nits. It also supports the newer HDR10+ format backed by Samsung and Amazon. Given that there is basically zero content available to watch in 8K, Samsung is leaning on upscaling technology for now. The company claims that the Q900R’s “8K AI Upscaling” feature uses artificial intelligence and a dedicated processor to bring images up “to a level compatible with 8K regardless of the original source quality or format,” which sounds somewhat optimistic. The Q900R will go on sale in at least some markets at the end of September, though Samsung isn’t yet saying where or for how much. I would expect the price to involve a number of dollars that is higher than the number of horizontal pixels. |

I'm happy to see the technology get better, but really, TV's are at the point of diminishing returns. Once we got 1080 as a sort of standard, I think that's really the useful limit, considering that most content doesn't meet even that standard. I think some of our local broadcasting, news, etc., is still 720.

I’m glad to see they’re finally giving the larger displays some love...I’ve got a 75” in my living room, it really could be larger given the size of the room. Didn’t they broadcast the Olympic s in 8k?

This is the ‘55 TCL I got off of Amazon recently for like 400 bucks, I certainly could have gone bigger, but it’s quite a jump in price after this size. Considering the throw away society we live in now, I just can’t justify spending any more for something that is basically a consumable item. Regardless, I'm happy with the TV. It replaced a 40inch Panasonic.

A lot of factors here such as the source resolution.
There are some good websites addressing what most people can actually see when upgrading to 4K. For cable I wouldn't bother if I was only using a ~50" tv set from 12' + away. Switch to Blu Ray and a larger picture and the benefits are more than just the smaller pixels. Depending on the TV/projector you also get HDR which is a substantial improvement. Again, much more noticeable with 60"+ of picture. 8K brings a whole other set of issues including color gamut and psychovisuals. Mostly above my paygrade but I've read some interesting blind studies done pertaining to the subject. I'm still happy with my 4K projector but the screen is 160" and you really do see a yuge difference. That said, I'm in no hurry to rush to 8K particularly until prices drop and their is material available in that format. 2020 Tokyo olympics will be shot in 8K as well as having 22.2 channel audio as well. Scott
