I bought the Ford mainly for the engine. They've had some version of the 2.3L turbo since at least 1985, in the Mustang SVO. That engine had 205HP/ 248#-ft, and after 35 years development makes 315/350. For my '22 Ranger, it's been de-tuned for hauling as 270/310.

The 2.3 is an excellent engine. My friend with the '91 Ranger bought a spare 2.3 at about 200k miles but never ended up needing it. He gave it to the guy he sold the truck to with 585,000 miles on it running fine. 5 speed stick, manual everything. I've worked on a million of those engines, and they only needed the normal little stuff. As tough as the old Slant 6 Chryslers.
