Default Rant: Smoke Detectors
Q: What's worse than a smoke detector which fails (gives false alarms) in the middle of the night?
A: A smoke detector that falses in the middle of the night when you're out of town.

I have a bunch of Amazon Echoes in my house. Amazon Alexa has a feature called "Guard" which uses the microphones in your Amazon Echo(es) to listen for things like glass breaking and smoke detectors going off. So last night in the middle of the night I got a bunch of alerts that my smoke detector was going off. Alexa records the sound that it hears and lets you play it back to verify, and sure enough the stupid ****ing smoke detector was going off. I checked my security cameras and there are no signs that anything is amiss - the house hasn't burned down - but needless to say there were a few anxious moments last night.

Tangential question: is there any make/model of smoke + CO detector which is actually reliable? The one that is failing is less than 2 years old.

Sounds typical for a First Alert device. My smoke detectors are wired in on low voltage vis security system with its own battery backup.
