Default Gifted mechanic here

I put new wiper blades on the Mrs.' Land Cruiser yesterday. While attaching the passenger side, the arm slipped and dropped on the glass. Sharp, pionted metal tip on auto glass - well, you know.

The star turned into an 8” run when she drove it today. It’s been quite a while since I’ve had to replace a windshield. This one has auto wiper sensor. Do I need to replace with OEM? This will be out of pocket.

Your car insurance doesn’t cover broken windshields under comprehensive?

Most do as a safety matter. Worth a call at least.

I’m going to check, but expect they’ll only cover an aftermarket glass.

What kind of deductibles are you carrying? I usually have $ 500 deductibles, and I've never spent more than $ 250 on a windshield, and I have bought a bunch over the years.

Check your policy. Many policies allow you to demand OEM parts for all repairs. I had State Farm when my C6 took a rock in the windshield. Cost me $100. I demanded an OEM part from a Chevrolet dealer and got it. The retail price on the OEM HUD C6 windshield was $966.

Even if you had to pay for the OEM part out of pocket, maybe the insurance will cover the install with you paying the deductible. That's still better than you paying for the parts and doing the work yourself.

It's not just the glass but you will need a new gasket for the sensor that touches the windshield.I'm sure your glass company has done this style before call and ask them.

$1000 deductible Local glass shop I’ve used before quotes $265. Dealership says they gotta have the VIN to give a quote. Think I’ll pass.

In Florida, deductibles don't apply to glass replacement.

In Missouri also and probably every other state. Also it doesn't count as an actual claim so you don't have to worry about your rates going up or anything. Our insurance has a deal where if you are three years claim free you get a big refund every year. We'd been getting that for a long time and were worried about it sabotaging that. Checked with American National and they said not to worry, and got my wife's RSX windshield replaced for $50 IIRC. And we demanded OEM.

I've got more stars than the walk of fame on my windshield and in 17 years not one of them will turn into a crack. I have no idea why. My windshield looks like it was sandblasted too. I WISH it would break so I could get it replaced.

I did the same thing on my Audi Q7 about 3 years ago and insurance paid for a replacement. It also had the rain sensor's.

On a very hot day, park the car in the sun for a few hours. Then put an ice pack on one of the stars.

You're welcome.

If you would stay out from behind the damn coal trucks for a minute, maybe you wouldn't have busted windshields all the time!

I was on my way home before heading on a 6 hour road trip to my Mom's when a passing dump truck "threw" a rock that hit my windshield right at eye level next to the mirror but right in my line of sight.

Heavy local traffic on a two lane road made catching the son of bitch impossible.

Zero out of my pocket for glass replacement but a big ass reminder for the entire trip

While visiting my native SW Virginia years ago, a dump truck was slinging rocks everywhere and I had to buy a new windshield for my F-150. I was just trying to get by him on the interstate. But whatcha gonna do?

I had just been at my State Farm agent to pay my bill and was literally 10 minutes down the road when the "rock event" occurred.

I had my agent on the phone as I was trying to chase him down. He told me not to worry about it as in no money out of my pocket.
