Default 01 Focus Ztec twin cam engine.....

did the timing belt on it,...old belt failed, car towed and so cams did not turn at all, belt tired as I am.....

put new belt on it, engine revs really high, and as it warms up it goes rough and unstable in operation.....

the books give bad information.....in that there are NO marks on the crank gear or for that matter the cams....just to use a plate in the back of the cams to line them up for the belt install....which I did, and everything looked snug and right.....only issue is trying to second guess the position of the woodruff key on the crank....PIA.....

is the symptom possible with just a belt timing/notch issue?? or more in line with bent valves?? engine was listed as being an interferance engine, but I got decent air pressure from the valves being closed....and the cams removed from the head for that reason....

anyone???

Don't know that motor but a quick compression test on a few cylinders to see how even they are would be good to be sure.

I wonder if you're off a tooth or two and the engine mgmt system is over compensating?
Again, I don't know that motor but being 1 tooth off will booger up your coach.

Do a youtube search for Ford Zetec timing belt replacement - a couple videos might help.

One of them shows a tool you have to insert into the block to correctly line up the crankshaft.

Thanks on those videos, a couple of points that I got around, tore it down again this PM, and proved my own shit, finally found by chance my compression tester adaptor for that car....longer stem to grap the plug holes....odd arrangement....at any rate I bump 90+ psi on 4 bumps, read by time I duck out the door and get to the gauge....checked out the timing marks, but the one thing that gets me is that I have the cams in time with that shim plate in ass end of the shafts....and it's fine, thing that gets me is that the belt seems fine with the cams the way it was with the old belt....the plate is snug fit and lays flat on the head the way shown, belt seems happy, but maybe I have a little too much tension on it...so to relax that in the AM.....I had shoved a socket extender down the #1 plug hole and found TDC for #1 is in fact when the woodruff key is square up dead center....

spent bux on p/steering PUMP this PM, as that SOB!!! POS started raising hell really loud...full of fluid, so another 80 bux shot for nothing.....

think that shit would happen before we put 500 bux worth of TIRES on it??? HELL NO..... so a 200 buck A/C comp a month or so, and now a 45 buck timing belt, and now the friggin pump......I getting pissed...and deathly scared of something BAD and major coming up.....

between this and a 2000 Ford Triton 5.4 V8 on a F150 truck.....oil pump problems....I get this car on the road, I going to drop the oil pan on that damn truck and see if that stupid pickup tube is some failure or other.....
