Default It Was 50 years Ago Today...

that i left the induction center in downtown L.A and got on a bus with 60 other guys [no women] and headed up to Ft. Ord. 307 miles away. We left at 8 pm and got there at 2 am. We finally got to bed at 3:30. at 5 am the lights went on the DI's came in yelling and woke us up. They didn't even ask what i wanted for breakfast.

I remember sitting in the bus saying wtf? Blacks from the inner cities, Mexican gang members, Bikers, hippies, guys that never should have been drafted all sitting on the bus for the long ride.

I thought about the two friends on my street that got killed over in Vietnam, and the other 36 from my hometown that didn't make it back home. I was just a Fk'ing teenager not old enough to vote or drink. It's amazing how much of the Military i have forgotten. I don't know if it's because of so many years ago or because i have blocked out most of it. I'am glad i served but if i didn't get drafted NO WAY.

I worked all three years in high school to get enough money to travel and see the world. I quit my job to do that, when i got my draft notice it changed. I did see the world just not on my terms.

Well see, that was really rude, and hell, just plain insensitive of the DI's to not serve you breakfast in bed. And even more rude, is when they take a stick, and beat the hell out of a metal trash can before they toss it down the aisle in between the racks. Bastards...

Mine's almost 40 years ago now and it was MEPS in Fresno, CA. Same reaction about me being there with folks I wasn't accustomed to hanging out with, but I learned to really appreciate it.

Probably part of my belief system development that is tearing at me now...
