They can help and many are now clothes hangers just like treadmills. I bet you could find one used much cheaper locally. First thing to do is make sure you don't have have a wallet in your back pocket.

I bought one several years ago.
Keep an eye on woot.com...they have teeter hang-ups on fairly regularly.
Pretty sure I paid well under $200 for mine.

This is what a chiropractor told me. Inversion tables are mostly fine for people who are otherwise healthy and don't have any disc issues. They can get a good stretch with one. For people who do have disc issues, they are probably going to do more harm than good. For one thing it will be almost impossible to go fully inverted without your back muscles tensing up (a lot) so you won't be stretching, you'll just be miserable. And you can actually mess your back up more.

I've heard you need a second person around with these devices.

I have one. It helps about 20% of the time. As Cyber said, muscles will try to tense up. You have to mentally focus on being absolute dead weight and it is easier than it sounds. When you DO become dead weight hanging, there is a balance between back improvement and hip discomfort since your upper body is hanging from your legs.

Gene, one of the best all around things for your back is to get on a lightly padded surface or even out in the grass and lay down and then get back up. Do that for 10 minutes a day. It doesn't sound like much but you'd be amazed at how that helps your back and legs. Do it methodically at first so you don't hurt yourself if that sounds challenging. Vary it each time you get up to a standing position, like do it without rolling onto your side or stomach sometimes, you get the idea. Do a few pushups while you are down there.

A friend of mine with back issues bought one several years ago. All things considered, he felt that it aggravated his problems rather than helping.

Cyber, watt you said reminds me of my Father who would lay on the top landing of the stairs feet on top or one step below and rock his knees back and forth.....when I was a little kid....I would ask why, and he said it helped his lo back feel better....

I have no stairs I can do that with single story/slab house....how ever, I just need to try that...one of the rugs in the MBR.....
