You'd be surprised at how much monitoring we don't do. We only actively do it when we have a legitimate reason (beyond this is college/state owned equipment) like somebody doing illegal shit. Other than that, it's very passive because monitoring is extremely costly and time consuming.

Aero’s idea is a slippery slope. This kind of surveillance leads to more of the same. Before long behaviors are changed, data is collected and trust is lost. All bad.

None of what has been said here is specifically untrue. I agree with it philosophically. I don't at all like the idea of cameras and tracking etc. BUT, I also recognize that education has shifted from the days when I was in school where we learned only the subject and not the emotional impact that subject has on the teacher or other students. I had a semester of studies of the ME. I learned of the caste system in India, and a host of other topics. I was never challenged with the value of one religion over another. Simply an explanation of the various aspects.

We also had schoolyard fights, not guns in backpacks. We didn't have widespread attacks via social media, of kids on each other.

We also don't have control over the staff on a micro level. I knew of kids in school way back when, that teachers simply did not like. I have no idea why, but it was very apparent that kid was doomed in that class. Parents would try to get them moved to a different teacher, but it never worked. We kids saw it, but had no voice. If it was witnessed, or even the possibility of being witnessed by a parent or other school officials, it could have been addressed. It would not be hearsay or a vendetta against authority and the assumed honesty of the teacher and dishonesty of the student is eliminated without doubt.

Part of gaining control over the system and vetting of bad players, is having tools to weed out the bad players...whether student or teacher.

If the majority here believe the system isn't broken, then I'm standing for something that doesn't need fixed I guess. Stories I hear from neighbors, the news, and teacher friends, say otherwise.

Yes, trust, but the sentence that really applies is "Trust but verify". If you go an entire school year without incident, turn the cameras off. Like the paddle hanging at the front of the classroom, it was the threat of using it, not the actual use, that kept the majority in line. Very few kids got paddled. All knew they could be.

A camera is only as good as it's monitors, who's watching and who's paying for them.....? Thousands of schools times countless multiples of classrooms, + pervs, hackers, vandals.....Not to repeat the others above.....

I mean come on, your done here.... As you continue to slide lower and lower on the intelligence/maturity front, using curses and insults, I'll again do my best to leave..... your turn....

Pedaero's up next.....

How do you see this playing out? Hypothetical example time.

Ms Rottencrotch is teaching American History and spends what you feel is an inordinate amount of time on black history. You watch all this develop from your home office and flip the hell out, calling the school demanding her job. Meanwhile, the other parents are doing the same and applaud the teacher for her curriculum.

Who’s right? You? Them? Who decides what’s appropriate and what’s not?

Sure. If a teacher cuffs a kid upside the head that’s over the line. But be realistic; how often do you think this happens? Often enough to warrant cameras in the classroom?

You mean it leads to something like the NSA spying on citizens?

Now we are getting into some great insults. I believe we finally have enough to move this thread to PR&C where it really belongs.

It's not for me to decide what is an inordinate amount of time, but what I know of teaching is that lesson plans are made and testing milestones are given. So two things...if what she is teaching is in fact, history, without commentary, I have no issue with it. If it is intended to take four sessions and it does, I have no problem with it.

If she starts preaching about oppression and social injustice by placing blame on the white students in the class, I may have an opinion to share on that. It would be no different than teaching black kids the accolades of the KKK. I admit it is subjective, but when my step-daughter was in school, we received a course outline or syllabus for each class that notified us of the material covered. Discussions can cause drift, but the teacher's job is to stay on course and cover the material. As the students get older, there could be a shift in that dynamic as they are more socially aware than a 1st or 2nd grader.

As for a teacher hitting a student, it is rare. I'd say incidents of students hitting teachers is higher. That student needs to be removed. If they are willing to fight a teacher, they should be considered and equal threat to other students. Now, maybe the teacher provoked the hit? The game footage will tell all.

This is also a tool beyond discipline. Helping with homework is a benefit.

Everything in our lives is a potential slippery slope. We have speed limits that are 85 or under, across the nation, but cars that go well over 100. There isn't a need to make slower cars, because there are controls in place to deter speeding. We have porn on the internet that can be accessed simply by clicking a box that says we are over 18. It is put there to keep lawyers at bay, not to protect young minds. Everything has potential for abuse. Weighing one against the other is critical. More harm than good? Serious question, at the student's level, what is the harm of a black orb mounted in the corner of the room? To the good kids and good teachers, good parents, it is inconsequential.

This is dialogue surrounding an idea. For some reason there is a sense that the fkn military is mounting cameras tomorrow so pervs can watch children.

Pick ANY topic...literally ANY topic and I can present the dozens of ways it will be abused. The idea here is discussion. The children in the group are struggling with that. I appreciate your, DJ's, and others points of debate.
