When I was young (50-60 years ago) it was fairly common to see wheat (grain) fields like the one in my OP where half of it was blown down by a thunderstorm.

When the farmer saw that he probably said “Oh shit” but I doubt he was thinking about bran and bowel movements.

All that grain (bran is a part of the kernel) was lost because combines cannot harvest it unless it is standing up. Then they started breeding grains with shorter stalks so it rarely blows down nowadays.

The old days " . . . for amber waves of grain . . . " -- when that song was composed you would actually see that with a decent breeze, but you don't anymore cuz short stalks.
