Default Cleaned the Garage and Found a Motorcycle

Well, another project, but this one's not going so well. So I decided to get my Yamaha Road Star out try to get it running. It's an '05. Not much gas in it, so I pump it out. Yuk. It's rusty. Tried adding a half gallon fresh gas at a time, sloshing it around, and pumping it out. Still came out nasty. Rinse and repeat. Somewhat better, but still mildly discolored. Sprayed carburetor down....lots of gunk came out.

OK, I'll just drain any remaining fuel right from the petcock on the tank. Break old fuel line to filter, which is OK, I had planned on replacing all that anyway. turn petcock.....just a drip, telling me the pickup tubes are clogged up. OK, remove petcock assembly and....it looks bad. there are cracks in the pickup tube, and it looks like there were some kind of prefilters that have totally disintegrated. the valve is totally clogged, carb cleaner did nothing. Remove the selector from the valve body and....looks like someone packed it with old grease. Cleaned all of it out, both pickups are clear. reinstalled petcock.

Put a temporary line from petcock to fuel filter, put some fresh gas. OK, let's see what happens. Fuel pump worked, and since I had disconnected the return line on the carb, fuel starts pumping out of the carb. Oops. But hey, at least I flushed old gas in the carb, so there's that, right? Reinstall return line. OK, big moment, let's fire this puppy up. Crank. Engine turns over, won't start, and I discover the throttle is stuck, I mean, really stuck. Shit.

Remove tank, remove carburetor. gunk on intake side of butterfly valve. Multiple shots of carb cleaner. Butterfly valve STILL stuck.

Gave up, I'll try again next weekend.

Moral of story: Do NOT let your shit just sit. Run it.

Part II next weekend, hopefully.

For carb cleaner, I HIGHLY recommend Berkebile Gum Cutter

Those are Chinese knock offs, so the fit will probably be iffy. Might do it anyway. My big concern is the rust and tar like gook coating the inside of the tank. I figured if I get it running, I'd just replace the in line fuel filter frequently, to catch the detritus and hope for the best. I sprayed some carb cleaner in the part you can access from the filler cap, but the the other half of the tank you can't really even access. Maybe fill it with Berryman's. let it sit a couple of days, pour it out, and see what it looks like?

This is all assuming I can get the carb running, a big assumption.

Stickers are from 2015. It was probably run a few times after the stickers expired, but I'm just gonna guess 4 years.

I was hoping I could get it running, then put new fuel lines, filter, tires, and change the oil. I wasn't expecting the butterfly valve throttle to be stuck.

I'll be watching this one!

My neighbor has an motorcycle that has been sitting since 2005. He has tried to get it started a few times over the years, and been unable to get it to fire. He says he wants me to help him this spring, that he is ready to sell it. I said I'd be happy to rent a trailer, and tow it with my truck to the local motorcycle shop for him, he didn't seem thrilled with that idea. I don't know shit about motorcycles.

Bikes are finicky when they don't get run often enough.

Mine sat for just over a year but moisture got into the valve train and screwed up the seats.
Had the heads rebuilt and carbs adjusted.

Of course it's a 4 cylinder....

OK, VB mechanics, I'm ready for some advice....the butterfly valve that's operated by the throttle is just plain frozen. I've douched it with carb cleaner repeatedly and nothing. I've also lubed the linkage outside, which wasn't dirty or oxidized.

Great bike! I had the same in dark red as my first street bike. I regret selling it after grad school.

With the caveat that I have already admitted that I don't know shit about motorcycles, I have a few questions:

In the first pic, that looks to me like the choke plate with a mechanical choke. Is that correct? If so, is that working?

The second picture is really blurry, and I'm not sure what is happening in the throttle body as a result. Is there a throttle plate there? if so, and it isn't moving, can you tell why not?

Stuck as shit stuff like this I have had a lot of luck with "Kroil", it takes a couple of days of soaking, but it does free up a ton of stuff.

OK, first pic is looking at the carb from the intake side, second is looking at it from the air filter side. On the first pic, see the spring and round cable holder? That's holding the throttle cables. The choke seemed to be operating OK, but the choke cable screws into the carb body, so it was removed to get the carb loose. IOW, I believe the gold toned plate in the center you're looking at is the throttle plate, not anything to do with the choke.

In the first pic, the black cable hanging down is the idle adjustment, the other is an electric cable, not really sure what it is.

Aluminum is bad to warp. You can try a LITTLE heat in the area to free it up. You are still going to have to open the carb and clean the jets, bowl, check floats, etc...get a rebuild kit.

Submerge the entire carb. in hot water for a bit and try working it.

You are also going to have to do a major clean on the inside of gas tank and possibly line it. Of course, you want to do this without damaging the paint. It will depend on how rusted it is inside. Shine a flashlight in there. Even a speck of sand will clog a carb. jet.

I did electrolysis on one my vintage bikes to preserve the original paint. Heavy layer of petroleum jelly, shrink wrap over that with multiple layers, etc...it worked.

If you line it stay away from Kreem! Go with Caswell or the Redkote from O'Reilly.

OK, so I put a wrench on the nut holding on the spring on the side, and the flapper opens and closes, but not freely. Spray lube oil inside the carb housing sides where the flapper is affixed? Back nut off slightly?
