Default Guy sent his resume in for a position at work today..

My Director calls him to do a phone interview and to clear up a 3 year gap on his resume. Turns out this guy got laid off 3 years back (ex mortgage underwriter) and he hasn't had a job since. My boss cut the phone interview short and thanked him for his time.

The fact that this guy sat on his ass for almost 3 years without lining up any real employment turned him off and to him spoke volumes about his work ethic. I can't say that i disagree..

Guy should have lied and said he was a consultant, or otherwise self employed during that time period, and lined up one or a few folks with jobs to lie for him as references. Talk about unmotivated. Good thing you guys didn't hire him. He didn't even care enough to lie about it.

It really depends but it surely does NOT look good. Did he go to school or anything? Did he work under the table at all?

Sometimes people will omit certain jobs on their resume to hide the fact they took a serious step back.

Psychoblonde has been laid off since May 2009. She took care of her Dad a mom that year until her dad passed in Nov of 2009. She has been applying for jobs and been interviewing ever since. She has a great work ethic (being an ex employer of hers so I can say that with 100% certainly) but it seems since she got her degree no one is hiring in her field or banking which is what she use to do.
So Mark I think your boss is painting with a broad brush.

It looks bad but women do it all the time. Why can't men take a couple of years off?

I would have to assume that the guy did not have a reasonable response to the three year gap question.

I can't speak to what he did or didn't do in the interim as I didn't hear the convo. I just heard him talking to a team lead about the guy in passing. I'm sure he gave him every opportunity to clarify what happened in that time frame but whatever he said my boss didn't care for the answer..

I think Boss should have focused on the guys credentials and suitability for this job instead of focusing on a gap in his employment. Too much speculation there as to why he didn't work. At least interview him in person to get a better feel. Water under the bridge.

Maybe the guy made a boatload of money and is sitting on a few mil in the bank and wanted to take some time off. I don't see the problem.

Then there is my wife who has two businesses she does book keeping for, who want her full time.....with bene's.....

but that means pushing 40, where as NOW, she gets to keep her own hours, within REASON....

all this computer has liberated her more than ditching her ex.....

Laid off late Jan. 2009. If I find a job I like I'll go do it and do it well. I'll be 48 in April.

Last job was related to the mortgage business. Plenty of folks in the same boat.

If he was just milking the system; then yeah, to hell with him.
Shows what kind of worker he is.
Tough to say that in todays economy though. Slackers pass off their slackness under the cover of bad economy

This is what I would have done

I've interviewed several people in the past year. Long gaps in employment and jumping from job to job don't look good. If their other credentials look good, I'll ask them to provide more information concerning either issue in the interview. If they have a good reason, it's no big deal.

I disagree with the "if you don't work for awhile, it shows bad work ethic" statement.

If one has the means not to work for awhile and chooses to do so, they doesn't mean they are lazy and have a bad work ethic.
