Both the car and the Turnpike crush zones did their jobs. You can see the driver open the door shortly after the crash.

AND...if you look closely, the dude who's now lying on the ground, likely dead, didn't have his seat belt on. Why going so fast? Running from the cops?

Hmmm, Miami Herald says the ejected occupant will survive.

Looked like a Nissan Murano. If that were a fixed pillar, they would have been squished. The crash barrier at the site clearly assisted with their ability to survive that crash. The distance off of the ground that the car went indicates to me that they were doing between 80 and 100 mph. Looking forward to more info when it's available.

Back around 1974 I came upon an accident. One guy and gone through the windshield. I got out to help and the guys face and upper body were mangled like hell. The cop stopped me and said "He's gone".

Two days later I found out the guy was someone I went to school with since kindergarten. I've worn a seat belt ever since.

Always hated the term "accident" in vehicle crashes. Usually "accidents" are caused by at least someone or something at fault that could have been prevented, I call them collisions. Accidents are trees falling, lightning strikes, acts of nature, etc.

I'm a traffic and news reporter, and NEVER use the word. It's either a crash or wreck.
