RSS Icon Let's Talk about Organ Donation

A good friend's mother who I have known for decades died today. She was almost 80, and the hospital asked my friend if he would give permission for them to take her liver, to transplant in someone who needs one. I had no idea that an 80 year old liver would be useful for anyone.

My friend agreed to the donation, but I don't think he had ever had the conversation with his mother before that.

I know many of us have older parents, it would be good to have that conversation. Unless you have some religious objection, why wouldn't you want to give a lifesaving donation to someone in dire need?

You're right, I always thought even if I died now my organs would be less than desirable....would like to hear from someone to tell the real deal on this....if convinced Ill sign my license.

You have no reason NOT to sign. If your stuff is all worn out and broke down, no one will ask for it. On the other hand, if you have something useful, why not make it easy to help someone?

I'm almost 43 and I guaran-fu*king-tee you that they wouldn't be asking for my liver.

Sorry about your friends mom tho.

I plan on not only being an organ donor, but donating whatever is left to science so future medical students can marvel at my rugged, chiseled physique.

Free cremation!

Just know that you need to have that prearranged. I isn't something easily done after you die.

I am definitely an organ donor, my thought it is that once I no longer need them there are plenty of people who do. By working for healthcare organization, I've seen the impact many times.

Last time I was there, I asked if they needed any trombones.

They said "no, just organs."

Both my wife and I signed up through the DMV.

We have a little donor heart on our license.

I signed up to be a Bone Marrow donor 20 years ago. I would wonder from time to time but nothing. About a year or two back I called someone on it all and was basically told they only want the younger crowd. If you're pushing 50 or more, forget it.

I'm not an organ donor because I don't want to risk my organs going to someone who, if I were alive, I wouldn't want to save.

It's kind of nice to think that part of you would still be alive, and has kept someone else alive.

It's true and I'm not sure why I can donate platelets and plasma but the think my bone marrow is to "old"

I would do stem cells too but I think it would have to be a family member or someone I really loved as I hear it's a 2 needle process (one in each arm) for as long as 8 hours

You know the itches and pee pee and ......poo will start as soon as they stick you
