Default Pretty sure my wife is crazy...

Yeah she's married to me.

She's also sleeping outside tonight NE of Ely, MN.

With wind chill it could be colder than -40.

We used to camp. Now my wife considers it roughing it if the hotel doesn't have turn-down service.

She has a good sleep system. 0 bag in a -20 bag. High compression foam pads and she'll have a good wind block. I'm not too worried.

Why would someone intentionally sleep outside in that weather when they have a perfectly good heated home?

I use to love cold weather camping.
The slims would cuddle up to me for heat.
It really pizzed off some of their boyfriends.

Did that unstick her "I wanna do something incredibly stupid like sleep outide in -46 degree weather" button?

Sort of. Between semesters we work at the Boy Scouts' National High Adventure Base outside Ely, MN. During the winter we run a program called Okpik, which in the past partnered with the National Guard's Cold Weather training.

We teach scouts how to camp in cold weather safely. It's a pretty good time.

She likes the challenge. A lot of people wouldn't do that, and with the right equipment and preparation it's completely safe.

Humm, I dont feel so bad now.

I went backpacking this past weekend and only took my sleeping bag and hammock. Although, the temp only dipped down into the mid 20's each night.

My biggest issue was the 20+ mph winds all night. But I never got cold.

I figured it had to do with scouting, you have posted about working with the scouts before. That is very cool that you guys do that. It would be interesting to hear from her what it is like to camp outside when it is that cold. I cannot imagine what it would be like.

I'm too old for that crap anymore. The last time I overnighted in that kind of coldwas inside an old conversion van during a hunt. Had one of those Coleman heaters in there with me. No worries about CO poisoning, it was so freaking cold in that van you couldn't even feel any warmth coming off the thing. Sleeping wasn't an option beyond the pain in my toes. That was one longgg miserable night

I'm not a big hammock guy myself, I'm afraid it will be hard on my back. One of the trips I took out this winter there was a guy who did that. Got down to single digits and he stayed warm.

I did see some of your pics. Looks like you had a good time.

Absolutely.

Give me a heads up. Chances are good I'll be doing this over the next several years.
