The inlaws are leaving Naples in the AM and driving here to Savannah. No place in Florida will escape damage of some sort if the projected path is maintained, and we might have to move North and West even from here,

Pre-1900[edit]

Tracks of hurricanes over Florida from 1851 to 1899
Main article: List of Florida hurricanes (pre-1900)
The first recorded tropical cyclone to affect the area that is now the state of Florida occurred in 1523, when two ships and their crews were lost along the western coastline.[6] A total 159 hurricanes are known to have affected the state prior to 1900, which collectively resulted in at least 6,504 fatalities and monetary damage of over $90 million (2008 USD). Additionally, at least 109 boats or ships were either driven ashore, wrecked, or damaged due to the storms. A strong hurricane struck northwest Florida on May 28, 1863 and is the earliest landfall during the year known in the US.[7]

Information is sparse for earlier years due to limitations in tropical cyclone observation, though as coastlines became more populated, more data became available. The National Hurricane Center recognizes the uncertainty in both the death tolls and the dates of the events.[8]

my sister is 12 miles inland in ft lauderdale...not knowing the lay of the land, how much at risk is she?

Jose is expected to be a hurricane in a few days, and tropical storm katia has formed in the gulf.

Florida peeps: now is the time to evacuate. Right now. Get out. Y'all know better than anybody that this is no joke.

I have an estranged friend in Naples, and offered him a place to stay. He's very stubborn, I hope he gets out safely.

Time to GTFO. Looks like nearly all projected paths for this bitch have it pounding the shiite out of FL. Sustained winds of 185+ with gusts to 225? Fook that noise....

Latest models show more shifting to the NE but even if she does, that's a BIG storm that's gonna dig deep into the land.

I hear that.

My brother lives on Folly Beach (5 mins from Charleston) I'm waiting to see if he's rolling out.

He was there for Hugo in '89 and any storm over Cat 3 and he just leaves without question.

Just announced, they expect an emergency evac for Ft. Lauderdale by the morning.

I have 90% of the storm shutters up. I left the front door and most of the back sliders open It will take 20 minutes to put them up.

20 gallons of gas for the generator PLUS whats in my wife's car gas tank.

I went shopping earlier this week and got non perishable food, Beer, Booze, wine, snacks, beer, booze, cookies, steaks, burgers, beer, salsa, onion dip and booze.

I have to get milk, cigs ( for my wife) and coffee over the coming days.

With the current track the storm is looking to past just east of us. That works for me.

I have to help a friend tomorrow with his shutters and some other things. Going to the airport tonight to pick up my wife.

I may stop and get more beer and booze.

If it stays east of Florida, that helps a lot with potential flooding, being on the dry side. You'll still have a storm surge and wind, of course.

Either coast, I will get some of it. Coastline is around 50 miles to the east, 100 miles to the west. We are ready as we can be.

People go nuts with bottled water in times like this. I don't get it. I have some 5 gallon containers my dad bought years ago (probably before Y2K, actually), that we filled up with tap water. If things really go to shit, is drinking tap water really the worst thing you are going to experience?

Hell, instead of recycling your old milk, soda, and water containers, just save them and refill them with tap water prior to a storm event. Worst case, you spend a little time watering the lawn. Best case, you have potable water.
