We generally don't have fires out on the ice, unless there is low morale. It's pretty worthless as a heat source if you are properly dressed.

After spending 6 weeks in Southern Patagonia, I agree. We bought good gear (very important when it is rainy and cold), and layered clothing. Very important your gear is not useless when it's is rainy. Never got below freezing much but we experienced up to 70 knot winds frequently. We were always prepared with good clothing and survival kits in case the helicopter became stranded in some of the environments we were flying in.
