It's somewhat akin to the repeal of the Don't ask don't tell law.
A lot of people were worried about berthing openly gay members. If you take old cutters, with 20 man berthing, then you throw 1 openly gay person into a room with 19 straight military members, what is going to happen. The answer was "not much." There was a lot of questions about where do they sleep, and wouldn't putting a gay man in room with a bunch of men be like placing males and females together. Turns out the answer was no. The gay population, at least in the CG, is such an infinitesimally small cross-section of the members that there was literally no impact. I'm sure there were some guys with the "ain't no gay guy gonna sleep in my room" attitude, and they were weeded out fairly quickly, whether through attrition or simply shown the door. Adaption is a fairly core concept to the military. At least this is the case in a military service with 40,000 members. |

I remember talking to a guy that came from a sub tender that was stuck out in the Med during Gulf War one; they had just started putting females on ships. He said that there were nine females on board. After three months, seven left pregnant, and the other two left together.

My Father served from 1937 to 1957 in the USMC. I know he knew at least two gay service members. One was a Corpsman and the other was a Marine officer. Both won the Navy Cross in WWII. The Corpsman had served in Combat with dad an when dad became a Sgt Major he tried to get the corpsman in his Battalion during Korea. Because he saved lives. I also know he helped get a few out due to them abusing thier position for sex and for security reason. It' about the value you add to the organization . |
