if you've had a decent work history, SS is some good money to fill gaps you might have, or you can let investments alone for later.

as for work? no idea in FL, or anywhere else.

drive around, see who has signs up. or just stop in places you might like and ask if they are hiring. piano player in a cat house?
Thanks Douglas. Yeah I thought about taking SS at 62 as well, but still there will be a shortfall due to the ex getting half my pension money. I need to leave the rest of it alone to make some money. So if the economy stays in the chitter. I will not have to eat dog or cat food.

You know Larry. I took Real Estate classes many years ago. I was going to do a part time gig with it. The thing is. It seems like you need to know a good broker or someone to set up shop with right? Don't know anyone down here. I like the idea.

I am considering going back to where I just came from but through and employment agency working for a good friend in another department who needs some help a few days a week.
Pretty much the same idea, but for different reasons. 1. Getting some health stuff in order, and taking a bit of a break. I have worked for 45 years. 2. I will then have to dip into my money after Jan. The job thing will be more important after the first of the year

What Yadkin said. I get solicited for jobs weekly due to my CDL I've had from my old job.
I retired at 60, but with full medical. And am taking my SS in 3 months at 62.
I have always lived under my means and have saved money. Now it's time to live, IMO.
Can you downsize or tighten up so you don't need to go back to work? You are only a couple years shy of SS. And will your SS be enough, with your retirement, to live on?
Many people hire older folks because they have a great work ethic and are reliable and not on dope. You should easily be able to get a job at Ace hardware, NAPA auto parts, or driving a local delivery truck. Or even do on-line stuff.

Yes you will have to hang your license with a broker. They are everywhere. Especially in Florida. And yes they take a cut of the commission, but usually offer advice and basic administrative support.

And there’s nothing wrong with hopping brokerages. I’ve been with several over the years. Including a large Re/Max office at one point. Don’t do that, take my advice. Get in a small boutique brokerage office.

The money is there. It will always be there (despite what some think). It does take more effort than most see. There are significant expenses. And you have to deal with a lot of people, vendors, lenders, Bla Bla Bla.
PITA
But it’s mostly rewarding.

Think about this:
Every million dollars worth of property that is listed has about 50 thousand dollars in commission attached to it.

When I did my math, my break-even age is 79 collecting at 62 vs 67.
That is a boat-load of money I can invest or spend while I am still young enough to enjoy it. Taking it early for me is a no-brainer. Lot's of guys look at the monthly numbers and wait the full length of time and then die in 3-5 years. Or sooner.

This, I have a couple friends that did this prior to retiring and have done well. The only downside is competition and interest rates today. It's not an easy way to earn but you control your time management.

I retired early last year at 63 and spend time volunteering in a hospital ER as a patient advocate. I know there are several paid positions there as well, you may want to look at whoever is the major provider in your market's website You may be surprised what you find and it's pretty rewarding as well.

Me too, my break even was 68 and since SS is really the gravy for me as I can live without it, why not take it now and invest? No guarantees to out live it anyways.

Don and all. Thing is with SS at 62 it will impact your health Ins big. If you do not have a company sponsored Retirement health plan, and have to go to ACA for Oblunder Care, SS @$24k+ yrly Ttl can and will push ya over the AGI calculations if ya claim Gov Subsidizes

Ie. If ya make less than $65 k (call your accountant to find out your threshold), and add the SS as income ya loose subsidization with an AGI total of $89k ya loose ACA subsidization and have to spend ~$2-3k monthly for insurance wiping out SS draw down you Will get at 62

This was my dads situation. He waited until the last possible minute to retire and passed away a month before he retired. I’m hoping to take as early as possible. I’ve still got some time though as I’m only 40

This is a good point. Don, are you able to receive care through the VA? This saves me a ton on insurance.

No. I did not retire from the military. Did my 6 years, and got out. To Mike’s point he may have missed that my old company is picking up most of my health insurance. I pay less than 25% so it is cost effective for me to keep it.

Might be good for part time work as well since they usually do not pay benefits. I have worked on getting my monthly bill stuff down as well. The bad part is I got the new bike right before the retirement stuff was worked out. So now I have that added having a ton of fun with it though. You have to have a hobby or something to do as well.

Thanks for the serious responses some of the other ones are good too

VA is open to all Veterans. Never know what it may cost if you go in and ask.
Heck, you may even live after treatment.

I'm in PA so this won't help but the idea is there.

My boss owns a machine shop, welding shop and sheetmetal shop. We have a few "retired" guys doing sales, quoting and computer drafting.

Two weeks ago, one of the drafting guys decided it was time to go from five days to three days a week.

You may be able to pick up some work in the field you already know.
