Speed is almost never a reported factor in fatal or severe injury accidents, per government statistics. So, why do cops write so many speeding tickets if this is a public safety issue..?

In rural Tejas, most of our roads have improved shoulders, and, while it's actually illegal to pull over and drive on the shoulder, doing so to let a faster car pass is not only considered courteous, it's common place.

This happens much less often in suburban areas for a number of reasons, congestion, detritus on the shoulders, and the fact that many in suburban areas aren't old line Texans who understand the mores of driving here.

I had a white Crown Vic for a couple of years. Bought it from an eighty six year old lady. Wasn't a P71 but looked like it. Every time I go within eyesight of anyone on the highway you could see their brake lights come on. And seldom got passed.

Older drivers tend to get 'imprinted' unless they pay attention. Most of us here are car people so we know what the current law enforcement issue is. But I've seen people slow down for dark colored mid '70's Polaras, Impalas, and Crown Victorias here even though they have been out of service for 45-20 years. Just instinct. In CA, all the police and CHP use Dodge Chargers and Ford Explorers. Ford dumping the full frame RWD platform was stupid, IMO.

One of the coolest government vehicles I've seen was on I-5 a few years back south of Westley and north of Santa-Nella---a cherry 1969 K5 Blazer, blue with a white top, stock hubcaps, 4x4, with black CA 'E' plates. I think it was a fish and game vehicle. It was immaculate. Wonder if it's still in the fleet?
