Earned "bonus" pay on my allowance for doing chores beyond those required by my parents.

When I was 14 I learned that one should always secure a legally binding contract before agreeing to water the neighbor's flowers for two weeks. Cheap bastard paid me $15 for over 20 hours of work.

At 18, McDonalds paid me a fair (i.e. minimum) wage for the 7 months leading up to my enlistment.

When I was a paperboy there were kids like me who had a single route and who carried the papers in a bag or in a wagon (or, sometimes, a purloined grocery cart). But they never seemed to be able to hire enough dumb kids like me, so there were also a bunch of older guys who drove around in red Suburbans and covered the routes that didn't have anyone else to deliver them. Each one of these guys had to cover multiple routes, and you bet your sweet Aspercreme that they threw the papers out the window anytime they could. Of course, where I grew up there were a lot of 3-story brick apartment buildings, so more often than not they had to get out of the truck and walk over to the base of the stairs, and then they would throw the paper up to the third floor (or wherever it needed to go) to avoid going up and down 500 flights of stairs every day.

Ah, the good old days.

Y’all are way more interesting than I am. Mowed yards and baby-sat til 16, added fast food to that until I got a job framing houses, after school and weekends. Then got a plumbing supply warehouse job through high school grad. Joined the Navy at 19. I’ve got to say, every gig taught me something important.

First job was when I was 12. Had an after-school job working at a TV repair shop. Rode my bike 5 miles into town, worked at the shop for a couple of hours, then rode my bike home. On gravel roads. Got paid $2/hr, plus a percentage of the repair bill on the items that I fixed.
