Samsung reportedly won’t include chargers with some phones starting next year

Samsung may not include chargers in the boxes of some of its smartphones starting in 2021, according to a report from Korean news site ETNews. The company is taking them out because many people already have chargers and to help reduce costs, the report says.

While not including a charger in the box might seem like a big move, Samsung reportedly isn’t the only major phone maker considering it. Apple may do something similar by not including a charger with this year’s iPhone lineup, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Apple may also phase out the 5W and 18W chargers that currently come with iPhones (depending on which model you buy) and instead offer a new 20W fast charger that will be sold separately, said Kuo.

Removing chargers from phone boxes could be a major way for Samsung and Apple to lower the costs of selling their phones and make their phone packaging smaller, but it could also have a significant impact on the environment. Taking them out of some of the top-selling smartphones could help reduce the number of chargers that go unused and are thrown away because people already have a bunch more scattered around their house.

Eh, the three chargers I use the most are aftermarket ones. They are wireless pads and fast chargers, using the USB-C connectors and fast charging cables. Thing is though, they'll leave out the chargers and still ask the same price for the new phone. With modern phones, if you use the regular chargers it takes forever to charge your phone or tablet, the battery capacity is such that a fast charger is the only way to go.

Seems ridiculous at first but kinda makes sense.

I have lots of chargers hanging around I don't use.

I bought a wireless charging stand for my office, and at home I bought an organizer hub to store and charge all our tablets, kindle, phones, and power banks. So I have lots of chargers that came with various new phones sitting around in drawers at home and the office.


The thing is they won't reduce the cost of your new phone. It will just increase their profit margins. But not by much.

What is kind of ****ed up is a lot of third party charger producers do not produce the same standard as the phone makers. A lot of cords won't work with some products especially auto platforms, i.e. Android Auto and Carplay.

Dumb if you ask me.

You got to be careful and make sure the cable you are getting is going to work with your device and whatever else it will connect to. Amazon reviews are usually pretty good at calling out the manufacturer if their description is wrong. But understanding the terminology is important.

Fine by me. I have a drawer full of chargers - Samsung and otherwise - that I have never used. If my next Samsung phone doesn't come with a charger that just means less clutter around here.

Unless you buy Apple products (and why would you?) this needn't be a concern.

I remember years ago all our kids had different versions of I-Phones and all 3 needed different chargers/cables.

Meanwhile we had 3 other phones all made by different manufacturers that could all use the same generic charger.
