My dad paid me ten dollars a day to assemble furniture and load boxes into customers cars.
Thats when minimum wage was $3.35. |

My first real job was as a bus boy in a local place called Ellie-Mae's, I think I got 1.95 an hour but also got 10 or 15% of all the waitress tips. It was really a fun job I was 16(?), old enough to drive anyway and I think it was summer 1983? It was on that job that I was first sexually harrassed , one of the waitresses, a girl I went to school with, told me I had a cute ass and then asked another waitress her opinion....I was like..."duhhh, whut?" opportunity lost.

Summer 1981 going into 1982 I worked in a full service gas station making $4.00 an hour. That was my senior year in high school and I worked 40 to 45 hours a week. Before that I had summer jobs working in long haul freight trucking terminals (where my father was the manager) but I don't remember how much I made an hour.

Cutting tobacco in the hot summer sun from sunup to sundown during the early 1980's for $5 an hour (back in the day).
I also remember mowing lawns for anywhere from $10 to $25 an hour depending on the size of the lot, trimming involved, etc... First job I got that paid "decent" bucks was washing dishes at Fort Knox, KY. as a contract employee for the Army during the mid 1980's. That gig paid $13 an hour, plus double-pay if you worked holidays, birthdays, etc... |
