and I make ALOT more lol. I remember when the freeze hit us on 90/91 We stood in line for hours while we waited for the food George Bush Sr sent us. I still remember seeing a military plane land that had food from the first Iraq war We were financially devastated. I should have some new cameras come up in May |

My very first job, at age 16, was that of a waitress in a Sweet William Restaurant owned by Isaly's . It was a union job, I started at $0.65 / hour and within 3 years I was up to $0.80 / hour. Of course I made tips but back in 1973 if you made $1.00 off of a table of 4 that was considered good tip.

Started selling nickel bags to my friends at school in 6th grade, got a job in a pizza place when I was 15 for $5 and hour but it sucked so I quit after a month. Later I got a job on a farm baby sitting the migrants.

Threw papers for 2 years from age 11 - 13. As best as I recall, I lost money. My route was on the "wrong side of the tracks". From that to working as a farm hand for a buddy's dad. Pulled stumps and put up hay for $8/ day. Some of those days during hay season were 16 hours+.

First "real" job I earned $2.10 an hour fighting wildfires for the US Forest Service. Hazard pay and overtime bumped that up when I was actually on a fire.

Picking cotton ! Got 3 cents per pound and 12-14 pounds was about my limit for 4 to 5 hours as a 10-12 yr. old ... Moved up to 65 cents/hr by 1962 working in a radio/TV shop.

From age 8 to almost 16, I helped my grandfather on his huckster route. I did alright with tips.
I started at Bergey Tire in 1976 for a whopping $2.30 a hour. This was before the invention of "all season" tires. That meant when the weatherman said SNOW in the forecast, all hell broke loose In 1977, Bergey's purchased a Goodyear in a neighboring town and I worked there on saturdays. They had gas pumps there and it rained every freaking saturday for 9 weeks straight. People would come up in a downpour, put the window 1/2" and want $2 worth of gas |

$1.40 hour working in a Dairy Treet, then later on I went to work at a cotton gin and grain elevator for $1.25 hour (minimum wage was lower for agricultural workers.)
My first "Adult" job was $4.25 hour as a union apprentice plumber no benefits. A year later I went to work in a chemical plant for $4.02 and hour (but with full benefits.) That was 1973, later that year I got a .85 an hour raise, this was back during double digit inflation days. Within 3 years I was making $12.95 an hour and had less spendable income than when I made $4.02 an hour. |
