So much I could say about DC including traffic but I won't since there just isn't enough bandwidth.

I live off the dumfries I95 exit and it took us about 1 hour and 45 minutes to get there. We took the metro otherwise it probably would have taken logger.

The pizza and beer was good at Pizza Paradiso with Rob and Shannon, Gary and Rob and Jodi. The biers later at the Bier Baron were better and we had Andy as a very attentive and knowledgeable "bier tender" who suggested several very good biers.

Let me guess, it costs more when it's spelled "bier"

Everything turned out great! Good pizza, and a good selection of beers there too. Then back to the Bier Baron for some rare beers. Great company, too.
Altogether, a fine day with good friends.

If you guys want to chop some time off your trip home and bipass the 95 corridor, the simpleman68 hotel is still open

I used to take Rt. 81 South (an hour West of me) all the way down to Rt. 40 near Knoxville to see my Dad.
It's a beautiful drive with little traffic, particularly around the 4th.

We have space, cold beer and a deck of cards laying around somewhere.

If you mean I-81 to I-40, you sir, are mistaken. It is not a beautiful drive, and there is heavy traffic, and the place is filthy with revenuers.

The route that I take to Nashville from Boston area (well, from my house in Cow Hampshire) is I-90 to I-84 to I-81 to I-68 to I-79 to I-64 to Bluegrass Parkway to I-65 to Nashville.

However, since the OP will be heading back to Atlanta before going back to Nashville, my route may not work for them.

Then again, I-79 through West Virginia is an awesome road, with great scenery along the way. A quick jaunt down Route 19 to I-64 southbound to I-81 would make for a great alternative to staying on I-81 in Virginia. From there, they could pick up I-77 to Charlotte, then I-85 to Atlanta.

This route would avoid the clusterfvck that is I-95.

I haven't taken the 79 drop down through Pittsburgh in 10 years but it is a much more scenic drive than 81.
Just seems like it would be a lot longer than 81 down.

I just did the 81 drive into Blacksburg last month and it was worlds better than 95 traffic.
Only snag is that most of it is 2 lanes and many days, like Wednesdays, truck traffic is at a peak and screws up the pace big time.

Last month we averaged 72 mph on 81 almost all the way down.

Just checked Google Maps and it says the 79 route adds almost 2 hours to the Boston/Nashville trip drive.

I-81 is a connector between I-40 and the Washington DC area. More big trucks on that road than anything. It's a real mess. I agree with Snidely.

Those extra 2 hours are well worth it.

Damn.... gettin' tag teamed and shet

Either route takes you past my place. It's a nice stop off spot after the 6 hr drive from Bean Town.

No and I can say no dogs or fish were harmed during this time although the ale didn't fair so well.

Interesting I would have never thought to go out for ice cream after a few beers. I wonder how a beer float would do on a menu.
