I just got off the phone with Mary Smith from east bumfeck montana who suffered from a serious case of blah blah blah. She said, she would like it if her name was not mentioned in this thread, and to please respect her privacy as she is still undergoing treatment for her blah blah blah, thank you.

I am sooooo sick of this story being on every newscast on the continent for the last few days. And not once does anyone say that MOST normal people with the bad gene could not possibly afford the necessary surgery!

And no, it's not covered by our health care system either. So it's basically an option for brave ultra rich women.

Why don't they bring the $$$ up instead of giving false hope to women in this dangerous group.

3. It's not false hope if one is willing to do what ever it takes to beat a disease.
Including putting themselves and families into the poor house?
4. Here's some non "ultra rich" women who have had the same procedure:So, why don't they give the cost so people would know what to expect ?? It's like advertising a car and not including the price, which I hate.

As with every "new idea", change does not occur easily.
HMO's may "become aware" that by doing a preemptive strike and identifying people with the bad gene, their precious dollars may be saved in the long run by doing the operation.
The all mighty dollar drives everything.
1) Will it cost less to do the test for a person who is heritability predisposed to breast cancer than wait and treat one that will eventually get cancer??
2) Once a person is found to have the gene, is it more cost effective to do the mastectomy immediately, or, wait and do countless tests, prescribe thousands of dollars worth of medicine, make someone go to the doctor tens of times, and ultimately have a mastectomy anyway?
I don't have the numbers, but I'd venture a guess and say that a preemptive strike is ultimately less expensive.
If this is the case, just maybe the Jolie case will "enlighten" the money men, and it will eventually be covered by insurance.
Man, if you're sick of the hype, change the channel.
I will admit though, that one NFL game of pink uniforms is acceptable, but an entire month? I'm not for that.

More listening than actually staring at the set.

And here you go... Did the awareness that Jolie brought to this issue cause this article to be in the financial pages today? Uhh, yep....

I'm going to bet that the listed cost of all the surgery is far greater than stated in this article, but even at 23,000$ that's not covered by any plan, it's still a lot more than most can afford.

3k$.....just for the testing to SEE if you are prone to this disease!
