Check this series out, it covers these scams really well.

Running my own business, we receive these BS scam calls all the time (especially "This is John from Medicare Services").

If I have time, I'll lead them on and play for a while (I figure more time with me, less time for them to scam the gullible).

Why do you even post here? I never see you with anything positive, or personal, or funny, or newsworthy, or even political to contribute.....just following Yaddie around.
He's just a drunken, illiterate troll. A couple of oak stumps, some old anvils, a bottle of cheap hooch, and an F150 is his idea of a good time. All he needs now is a good friend to share the good times with.

Oh, wait...

My FIL got caught up in a few of these scams (recovering money from the State, and the FBI "we're coming to arrest you").
Luckily he called his daughter (my wife) on those occasions, and she got
the stupidity cancelled.

The more you answer, the more lists your phone number goes on. The scammers sell each other lists of numbers where people answer the phone. I used to do the same thing, and at one point, was up to about 20 scam calls a day. Thankfully, I had mostly transitioned away from that line for business calls.

I tried not answering at all, even went so far as to have the line disconnected for a month, but still. they kept calling. I bought a phone set that requires callers who haven't been pre-approved to announce their name, then press pound, in order to make the phone ring. That pretty much put a stop to scammers getting through, but even now, almost a year after I quit talking to them, the calls persist.

The calls still show up on the caller ID, so I know the volume of scam calls.

I am almost to the point of just dropping that phone number and starting fresh, but I'm stubborn, and I won't let the terrorists win. I can only recall a couple of times a scammer actually pressed pound, and the phone rang, but I knew anyone not giving their name to be recorded and played on the caller ID announcement was a scam.

My father in-law was a brilliant man. Got a HS diploma at 15 and in college right after. Several engineering degree's, attorney and such The family business built the Miami Dolphins stadium among other sizable structures. He was a dedicated family man and good provider.

When we bought our home back in 97, he grilled me like a fkn steak .

He passed 5 yrs ago at 93. The last 6-7 years he was losing it and was buying shit on line like Stauers and other crap. Subscriptions all over. MIL and my wife's brother had to put a stop to it.

They made sure he did not go to get the mail, cancelled credit cards and the whole enchilada. Never knew wtf was going to happen next. Fortunately they put an end to it all before it went too far.

Hard to ignore when a business line rings. But I've noticed 99% of these types of call show a Caller ID of a city and state. I've never seen a legitimate customer's Caller ID show up that way

My father was the smartest man I knew, still sharp at the end in most ways. I had to make his financial decisions the last year or so because people found ways to abuse his money, even some family members. I had one guy give him a quote to trim 1 tree and wanted $10,000 and I put a stop to it. He later said he did a little if the work and was going to sue dad for the money, I gave him my attorneys' card and told him to go ahead.

The worse part was his extended family coming up with sob stories on why they needed money. Put a stop to all that as well. People that take advantage of seniors suck.

Luckily 2 of the biggest scum suckers in my FIL family died off last year as he was always giving them money or cars(or a boat). I was fearing what would happen when he died that they would take advantage of my MIL and when I found out I'd need more than a couple of tarps and a big boat... Ya know to go fishing and keep the boat clean.

The trick there is to always use three cinderblocks and wire. Many people only use two cinderblocks, thinking that will be enough. But it takes three to keep a bloated body down.

I've seen a video about this scam. It's people overseas that are doing it, they recruit Americans to receive the money, who then take their cut and forward the rest to the overseas scammer.

Is it time for at least an unofficial guardianship? Y'all make sure dad's bills are paid, that he has everything he needs, but is prevented from being in this situation again. The fact that he figured out he was scammed soon enough to have UPS recover and return his package is good, but the fact that he was conned to begin with is really bad. I'd take him to the bank and go over the account history with his banker.

Do you have the e-mail trail? I'm guessing there were no phone calls, because then it would be obvious it was an Indian, Nigerian, or some Eastern European asshole, and not an American, on the other end of the line.

Best one I ever got was from IRS, told me I owed them $20K.
I told habib I agree, and knew I owed, and was ready to pay.
Let him know that I worked for FBI and had long lunches, so I would just bring the payment to him in person.
Phone went dead when I asked for his street address.

I asked Big Bob for his address when he wanted to fight me, but he won't even say what country he's in.
