If a crazy person and a sane person both commit murder, they are both equally guilty of murder and should be convicted.
I think a person's mental state should have absolutely no bearing on determining their guilt or innocence in a trial for a capital crime.
The guilt/innocence phase of a trial should be just that... to determine whether the person charged with the crime did it or not.
Then if they are found guilty they should be allowed to argue extenuating circumstances during the punishment phase, then the judge or jury can decide how severe the punishment should be or whether they should receive medical treatment in the loony bin.

That would make sense if we were robots, but we aren't.

For example, if someone breaks into your home simply to steal your television, the law rightfully makes a distinction between you shooting him to death because you were afraid for your life, and you coldly and calmly executing him after subduing him.
