So my friends wife REALLY wants to have a baby, it's really her only goal in life, but they have been struggling for the last two years going through almost all the options. Now she wants to try IVF (in vitro) and he doesn't agree with that (feels it is too close to playing God). They are both Christians, but she feels that "by all means" she will have a child.

From the perspective of other Christians, do you agree with him, or do you feel it is ok to do IVF because God gave us this knowledge?

Comments/suggestions/experiences?

not a fan of IVF.

maybe it's God's way of saying no. or adopt...who knows, you might get the next Steve Jobs plopped on your door step.

Had friends that went this route for their first. Lots of work with this stuff. I think they were thinking about it way too much. Told them to take a vacation and relax and not worry so much. The second time around and boom they had one the natural way. Then when they were not trying at all number 3 happens within a year of number 2

careful what you wish for.

Not very religous here, but medical help does not seem like a playing god thing at all. It's just help. Sometimes parent A or B has plumbing issues or other. If they really want children take the help.

Honestly, she should screw more and worry less. Stress can cause fertility problems.

It's my understanding that IVF can be very costly and not guarantee results, so I'd probably not go that route.

Every person I've ever met who was conceived via IVF freaks out around Thanksgiving with all of the turkey basters running around.

We did this to a young guy at work who was having the same problem getting the wife pregnant. Us older guys had the solution for him...
Take out the wife to a nice place to eat
Then go do something fun for several hours
Come home and start the bath with her favorite bubble bath soap
Open up a bottle of champagne
Then give me a call and I'll be right over.

If they are devout Christians, they should seek counseling from their clergyman. It may make them both feel better about whatever choice they make.

I agree 100%. Aside from the normal (and enjoyed) comments here, folks that strongly desire a child must make that decision by themselves. No one else is walking in their shoes. As per the Christian part, what does science have to do with that (or are you supposed to die from cancer without fighting it as well)? Trust me, those two people will more than likely be extremely loving parents if they are sucessful.

It's up to them, of course, but it might be time to get more involved with their faith regarding this matter.

Translation: he needs to step up soon before she goes to the sperm bank. I wonder how he feels about raising a kid that's not his?

If IVF is "playing God" then so is getting an epidural... technology exists, why not use it?
