Default So how much torque would you say an M22 is good for?

I have aline on an M22 to put behind the 489 I built, I think it will put out about the same power as a stout factory BB so around 550 ftlbs. I would think that an M22 would be good for up to about 600 or so.....what do you say?

I'm afraid they aren't. I spoke with David of David's 4 speeds on Ebay. He rebuilds Muncie's and BW Super T-10s. He said all the old school transmissions were good for less than 400 foot pounds. They may live for a whille put they will go pop after one time too many. Ask me how I know.

I might add the standard ratio for an M22 is 2.20 in first. You typically had to run a 4.11 to make up for that first but that in turn helped save the trans. That and the fact that muscle cars were running polyglass redlines and uniroyal tiger paws hence no hook. I popped first on my BW Super T-10 but it had a 2.88 first which is thinner. The BW Super T-10 out of a 74 vette that is now in it has a 2.43 first and has lived against my ZZ383 so far. I have done no "no lift shifts" though. I have banged at 6k though and have seen no ill effects. Torque on my engine is 460ft. lbs. and comes on high.
