I remember reading an interview with one of Eric Johnson’s producers who said; His technical ability is phenomenal but I wish he’d just bash around a bit more.

Eric lives in Austin. I get to see him in clubs. I only knew his slick commercial playing. That fluid, formal stuff. But the fact is Eric can play ANYTHING. I’ve seen him chicken pickin like Albert Lee and hitting Albert King like a bell. He can play jazz like a mother.

He can also dial in and out the reckless abandon of which you speak. I think with Jimi, his technical chops were always there but he was fall down wasted for all his recordings. Plus he had very bombastic drummers.

Truth be told, I’m not much of a rock fan anymore. I’m a groove player. I love to play just behind or in front of the beat. The best ensembles push and pull like this even in one song. Parts will be slightly ahead of the best and other parts behind. This is the definition of “swing feel”.

I love AC/DC. They are unbelievably precise and tight. But they don’t swing. We call it “four on the floor feel” the Stones swing. Knofler, Gatton, Chet, all blues guys, Buck Owens all swing. Hank Williams, Bob Wills, Brian Setzer swing.

Even some REO swings. White people swing.
