My mother had a garden when I was younger. About an 1/8th of a acre. It was a valuable learning along with the 1-2 weeks a year going to a cousins farm and helping them not go bankrupt.
I learned to respect farmers and stay away from it. Too much work, low to no ROI. |

My sister's inlaws had 40 acres back in the '50-60's in Rockville Md.....farmette that I learned to drive on, a WW2 General's Jeep, with white star on the hood....he served in the Navy.....Commander, Arlington.....
today it's full of houses selling for about a million bux each..... They had a HUGE Black German Shepard.......named Blackie of course.....used to go there for holiday dinners.....typically Easter.....and of course after feeding like 20 folks, the leftovers were fed to the dawg......so out went this HUGE roasting pan with everything in it....from deserts to salads to cooked veggies, to main course....turkey/ham/beef bones no matter..... Dawg would eat it ALL, chew a beef bone to nothing, even chicken/turkey bones, never bothered him at all..... I learned how to shovel cow/pig/whatever shit outta the barn there.....sorta lends a reality check to the phrase 'deep shit'...... house was a huge rambler with a full basement and a 3 car garage...... some bastards stole the Naval Academy sword from the fireplace, had his name on it of course, and took the brass ship's bell from the pole in back of the house, his wife would ring the bell at suppertime...... |

To me gardening is a big ass waste of time. We are swamped with great farmers markets nearby they sell their wares very cheaply and I don't have to dig around in the dirt to get it.

I grew lots of vegetables at my last house, not so much room in the mobile home retirement park, but I still grow some. It is less work doing everything in pots like we do now. Not as much bending over and easy to move things around every year. I never grew them to save money, I grew them to have quality vegetables that haven't been sprayed with various poisons and chemicals. There is a great produce market about 60 miles from me in a rural area where we go to buy large quantities for canning. They are very reasonable with their prices. If I lived closer to them I wouldn't bother to grow anything either. |

I had a couple of great San Marzano tomato plants that were producing like crazy, but they were a casualty during the fire after not being watered for 8 or 9 days while we were evacuated. At least I got about 10-20 lbs off them blanched, peeled and in the freezer before I lost them. All my other plants survived, including an Early Girl tomato plant.
