The issue isn't so much about "skills" as it is maturity and judgement.

The average age of a serviceman is 19. You have to be 21 in order to purchase and carry a handgun. The significance of those two years cannot be overstated.

NavyC5 made this statement;

However most of them simply do not have the skills to carry on a daily basis.
When I questioned that post, he followed up with

I never said they don't have the skills
So I was confused. Kinda still am.

Most of them don't have the skills
I never said they didn't have the skills
.

Regardless, I'm not military but it seems a little odd to me we have personnel in the military who are not at least semi-proficient with a gun.

I don't want to speak for NavyC5 but "skills" may not be the right word.

As I said, it was my job specifically to train an entire crew on small arms, 12ga, m9, and m4/m14 (shotgun, 9mm, rifles) as well as a much smaller number on the larger weapons. In my time in that role, there was exactly 1 person that I couldn't train to at least pass the basic qualification, a girl who was actually scared of guns (no shit) and ended up leaving the military after a very short time. They all had the "skills" to handle a firearm. When we got done with them, they were all at a minimum what I would describe as semi-proficient.

With that said, to add on to the statement above, a large number were 18-19-20 year olds with the maturity of a... well... something immature. They have the physical skills, but the life skills, experience, and judgment are a little more questionable at that point. When the shit hits the fan, I would trust them with anything but a few hundred thousand young "kids" walking around town with guns... just because... is asking for shit to go wrong.

I can believe it and here's why.

We have had maintenance people come to a Nuclear plant and tell us they'd really prefer NOT to work in the RCA. (Radiologically Controlled Area) Huh? I'm mean, you're a damn pipe welder. Some of that pipe, a LOT of that pipe is in the RCA. If you're afraid of dose, this probably isn't the best place to come.

One of my buddies is a power plant welder, out on site way across country for the summer, he never bothered to get nukey rated, but he goes inside a ~2' pipe and stands there for a day, going around in circles going over the same V untill it's filled, BORING!!!! but at end of summer he be back with some 25 grand in his account.....not so awful evil for a summer job.....

Mean Gene... did you carry full time while you were in the military?

Thomas, let me put this in perspective... Picture 19 year old Gene carrying 24/7.

It's not so much having Nuclear welding certs as much as the dose. The weld test for Nukes is pretty much the same test you'd take for an oil refinery.

I've spent entire refuel outages in Containment and picked up 0 occupational dose. In other words, having to work in the can doesn't mean you'll automatically pick up 5 REM.

I always knew you were a welder, but I didn't know you were working in a Nuke plant.

I was at the open market over in town one time and a bird crapped on me.. my hair was a mess, and had it on my hands and fingers after running my hand through my hair to see what it was.

Some old lady told me it was good luck..

yeah right..
