that's not the reason they do it. In some cases they're trying to get people to click "ok" or "stay" which could result in the page running malware on your computer or phone.

I close the tab and that usually takes care of it. If not, the browser and all instances of it, wait 30 seconds, then check task mangler for remnants and kill if needed. Can't be too careful.
