Our house in located in Ellijay. The traffic is nothing like Atlanta, unless you get stuck behind MeMaw or PawPaw on one of the area's single lane roads. Blue Ridge also has a lot to offer, as do some of the other neighboring areas a bit further north. Good luck. |

Last time I was in the area was in the fall. Too many leaf peepers. Unlike most people, I can handle Atlanta traffic. Don't like it though.

That is what got me interested. And there is this rather large house on the side of a mountain there that looks incredible.

I live in the foothills of the NYS Adirondack mountains on a large lake. A little town of about a 1,000 year around people. Other than dodging deer the driving is real good up here except for the summer weekends when the flatlanders come to their summer camps. We get a lot of leaf peepers but for the most part they are not much of a problem. We have no traffic lights in the town (Red, green, yellow) We do have a few stop and go blinker lights and many STOP or YEILD signed roads. We are also at the far end of the county so LEOs do not spend much time up here and the speed limits are more of a suggestion. In fact its quite possible up here to go over 20 miles in any direction from my house and not hit a traffic control light.(Red, green, yellow) |

We utilize an underground spring for the pasture to feed livestock and for our gardens. The spring itself shows-up on survey maps from the 1800's . The spring feeds into a cistern which stores hundreds of gallons at a time. It's pumped out for usage. I also have a valve controlled overflow that is piped (pvc) into a french gulch that flows off the property. It will flow slow in late summer for a few weeks which we just water with well water temporarily if need be.
Here's what the spring/cistern looks like. |

When we lived in soCal, we lived in Kern county, near Bakersfield, in a mountain community at 4000' called Tehachapi. 1 hr to Bakersfield. 1 hr to Lancaster/Palmdale (we worked at Edwards AFB). Easy hop on 58 to get to 395 and Bishop, Mammoth, Heavenly, Tahoe, Mt. Whitney. Easy hop to drive to San Luis Obispo or Paso Robles for visiting wineries.
It was a great area, and far enough from LA that we didn't have that mess to deal with unless we drove down to Marina Del Rey to go sailing or hit Long Beach or whatever. We'd still be there if a better job option hadn't opened for me at another NASA center. California has AMAZING geography - some of the most beautiful in the world, but the politics run by the big cities on the coast was just a PITA. Fortunately, in Tehachapi, it wasn't to hard to avoid that crap. But if we were to look for mountain regions today, we'd be looking at New Mexico (Santa Fe or Albuquerque) or Colorado (Estes Park or one of the cities along the base of the mountain range. Utah, Arizona, etc have enough people there and the water issue is just something we cannot overlook right now. If this 20 year drought ended and things got back to more what it used to be, we'd be all over Utah and the Moab area. |
