"Men are like steel. When they lose their temper, they lose their worth." - Chuck Norris

A bowling teammate of mine once told me that just as I was about to choke an asshole that was taking waaaaay too much time for his abilities. It has stuck with me.

This is exactly my point. As much as you probably can't understand my reaction, I don't understand yours.
I "want" to be just a "let it go" person and do my 55 in the right lane and let the world fly by.

I just don't have the wiring in me or the tools necessary to be that way. I was looking for real world experience from people that may suffer from the same thing and whether it was counseling or medication, or meditation, or what exactly worked. I am wound way too tight and I can't seem to decompress ever.

Some of it is the fact that with my age, and my lack of college education, it seems my life is always on the teetering edge of implosion and the stress from that keeps me at level 9 all the time so the smallest thing takes me to 10 with little effort. It is exhausting...truly exhausting. The odd thing is, my friends never (or rarely) see this in me. It is my family unfortunately, and particularly my wife. She has had enough, I have had enough. I just don't want to go through the expense and time it takes for anger management meetings etc if I hear stories of repeated failures. If it doesn't work, I'd rather know now and find an alternate solution.

Ugh, I am just beat from it all. Too many years of stress have just got me hard wired for disproportionate reactions to daily encounters. I am afraid I am a lost cause.

I'm with Tom.. Nothing helps me calm down more than running and physically exhausting myself. It also allows for you to have time to clear your head and think things through.

Aside from that the one thing that really taught me patience though we're my kids. You can't just blow up on them because you feel like it. Half the time they don't know any better so you are forced to take a step back collect your thoughts and be rational and not aggressive.

Having kids has made me a better person... No bullshit.

I do this now. I react and then once the pressure valve has released, I reflect on it and realize it was a bit much. Problem is, it has already happened. I want to get in front of it. Stop the reaction. In the short term, the rubber band thing may have some impact. I still want to pursue a long term fix.

Same here.. But you can't just beat your kids whenever you fell like it.

Ultimately you love them and want to teach them right from wrong. That love for them 95% trumps the urge flip your shit and go off.. Don't get me wrong there are still times I (as well as my wife) have to walk away but they for sure have mAde me a better person and changed my outlook on the world...

Simple way - find a good psychologist that specializes in anger issues. You'll be amazed at how much they can help you change.

Music (listening, I can't play) got me through a lot of ups and downs in my Silicon Valley days. What has added years to my life was moving to a small town. No traffic, clean air, fewer idiots to deal wit, etc. I was also fortunate enough to meet my wife here. The down side, and I knew this going in, is a much lower income. But my income in silicon Valley wasn't exactly keeping pace with the times 25 years ago, either. Being single, I had no hope of ever buying a house there with one income. I've owned two here, and they're still cheap in my county.

I enjoyed the nightlife and excitement in my younger years, but now I enjoy gardening, volunteering, things like that. I can't afford the car hobby, but hey, been there and done that. I'm glad I did it when it was cheap. I owned a handful of muscle cars that would look like Saturday night at Barrett-Jackson today and I never paid more than a grand for any one of them.

Don't build anger, build good times, they make better memories when you're old.
