There is nothing wrong with a laser per se. The military uses lasers quite effectively when they combine an IR PEQ-4 with a set of NVGs. When utilizing NVGs, a properly sighted IR laser is deadly. That being said, if you are going to mount a laser, make sure and do a function check once a week to ensure the batteries are in good order and shoot it often to make sure that the laser is still sighted in. The reason that law enforcement and the military get good results is 1) they tend to use them in IR mode, and 2) They shoot them and function check them routinely.

If you are like most self defense gun owners, you will shoot the gun once when you get it then maybe once in a blue moon. You can’t just put the gun (and laser) in a drawer and rely on it to work when you need it a year or two down the road. This is why most experts recommend iron sights. Even if you throw your gun in your panty drawer for five years, you know iron sights will still work. You won’t be able to say the same about your laser. Some of your cheaper (read Chinese made) lasers have a battery self-discharge rate just from sitting and may run down unused.

So if you are “that guy” who intends to function check the weapon routinely, I say go for it. If you are “the guy” who leaves his gun in his panty drawer for years until he needs it, then stick with iron sights. You don’t have to tell me which guy you are. Just be honest with yourself.

I have heard good things about them but haven’t shot one. Honestly, I think the majority of sub compacts out there are good to go. What matters it how you like it. I have been happy with my Walther PPS m2 with upgraded sights.i would also check out the Sig P365 and CZ is coming out with a new striker fired sub compact.
