Default Sometimes Superglue really is super.

We have some curtain rods in the master bedroom that have these crystal ball things glued to the ends. The balls weigh about a pound or so, fairly substantial, and one afternoon while my wife was taking a nap one of them fell off, scaring the crap out of her as it sounded like a gunshot when it hit the hardwood floor. It's been up to me to fix it. Well, I finally got around to it when I found the Superglue (Krazy Glue, whatever) that had eluded my search for a few days.

Scraped off the old glue with a razor blade, cleaned with 91% alcohol, roughed both pieces up with some sandpaper, and applied the nice freshly-opened Superglue. I didn't have my reading glasses on, but the alignment looked pretty good at first glance. The metal piece was held in place with my shop vice, nice and level. After about 5 seconds I realize the alignment is a bit off, try to slide the ball over. Won't. Figure, well I'll just pull it off, clean with acetone, and start over. Nope. Won't come apart. I got a rubber mallet and whacked it a few times (not hard enough to break anything hopefully.) Nope. Never coming apart. I'm pretty sure that these two pieces will be found glued together 2 million years from now.

Yup. When surface prep is done correctly that's what happens.

And your never going to hear the end of it from the wife unit.

Makes one wonder why the manufacturer didn't use Krazy/Super in the first place...

I used to love the ads with the hardhat guy suspended from the girder... always wondered how high up he actually was...

I have used super glue on many things and so far the only success I have had is gluing myself to whatever I was working on.

Works wonders on cuts from home projects as well. Better than band aids by far.

That's been my experience too. The glue they used was kinda soft, probably a silicone-based glue. But I thought epoxy would be better, but I couldn't find the epoxy, and I knew I have some. Oh well, I know I bought that Superglue a couple years ago. Looked, looked, looked. Found it on the floor of the garage behind a bucket when I went to grab some sandpaper, and then a run to Lowes to replenish my glue supplies. Decided to give it a try. It worked.

Acetone (nail polish remover) will unstick super glue.
