As far as Republicans not giving a shit about health care "for the people", I put that on the same plane as wanting dirty air and water "for the people". They are just complete lines of shit that when repeated on end without rebuttal sound plausible to those that want to believe it. |

I know how you guys feel aboot this so I'm not going to get in to if this is a good or bad thing.
What you think is good enough for me. There are members on this board who have been almost bankrupted because of huge medical bills. Isn't this going to help prevent things like that from happening to "good" people also? |

She is retired now, and the COBRA is expensive. She will qualify for disability once it runs out. I have had to go on the open market to purchase an individual plan. It is not very expensive, but has a high annual deductible, which will be doable, but a financial burden if anything big happens. Life itself is a risk, and it just goes on. |

The blind stupidity and willful ignorance of the left on this is simply stunning. "Go Team" Mentality, all they care about is that Democrats did a thing and they won. Stupid.
Treating the individual mandate as a tax does NOTHING to protect individual liberty and limited government. Now congress has carte blanche to force Americans into doing anything as long as they characterize the fine/punishment for noncompliance as a tax. Justices Roberts, Sotamayor, Ginsburg, Breyer, and Kagan basically just gave the Federal Government an Easy Button for completely subverting the constitution and making Americans do anything they damn well want. It actually would have been BETTER if they had ruled it was constitutional under commerce clause powers. Treating it as a tax creates a streamlined process by which the federal government can piss all over any notion of individual liberty and limited government and do ANYTHING to us. ALL they have to do under this ruling is impose monetary punishment and call it a "tax," and they can force us to do ANYTHING constitutionally as long as this sham ruling remains in place. Hey Joecooool, how would you like it if Romney becomes President, Republicans take over the senate, and they pass a law requiring every American to annually purchase a $100 share in the newly formed "Republican Campaign Corporation," giving the Republicans an annual campaign fund of $30 BILLION DOLLARS ????? Guess what, under this ruling it would be perfectly constitutional for them to impose this scheme if the enforcement mechanism for noncompliance was a $100 "TAX." STUPID, STUPID, STUPID. Worst SCOTUS decision of our lifetimes. Hello Big Government, Goodbye individual autonomy.

And here we thought Justice Roberts was a conservative. Was he bought off? No truly intelligent person could make a ruling like that. Ridiculous.

I won't even bother with the other "generalized" statrements. It's sad when people have glee over the spending other peoples money. Making yourself feel good - by spending your neighbors money - is nothing to be happy about. |

Uhm. Will - Congress has had this ability since the Constitution was ratified.
They did it for income tax, social security, medicare ... This is merely the next step in the socialist programming of America. Next up - Higher education. The only way to control escalating college tuition is to give every American child the right to a college degree. A simple tax on every American will allow all high school graduates the basics of a four year ride at a state school without the onerous burden of student loans. It's the fair thing to do. |

Well, thats where we disagree. I view needing health care in the same realm as needing an education, fire or police departments. Essential public services.

Congress can literally now make anyone do anything it desires as long as the punishment for noncompliance is a "tax" Celebrating this ruling is like celebrating saving a starving dog by feeding it 10 babies.

So let me get this straight. The law requires all American citizens to purchase health care insurance, but if they don't comply they will be charged a penalty which they may or may not pay since there is no penalty for not paying the penalty?
Also, as I recall reading, if someone who has not purchased health care insurance (or enrolled in the government health care insurance) is admitted to a hospital they will be automatically enrolled in the government health care insurance and be required to pay for it for the next year (or two?)? If this is the case, I don't see why any healthy person under the age of 40 would bother to either buy health insurance, or enroll in the government plan. It is a very high monthly expense that for healthy young people is only a necessity in case of sickness or injury. But now under ACA they are assured that the .gov will give them all the medical care they need if they are sick or injured, and they will be billed only for the cost of the government health care insurance, but they don't really have to pay for it since there are no penalties for not paying. Is that correct, or am I ? |

While the Democrats always said this wasn't a tax while proposing the law and sneaking it through Congress, apparently the government's lawyers made the case during arguments before the Court that it was constitutional as a tax. Roberts wasn't the problem, bait and switch by the Democrats was what got this through the Court. The end result is that Obama just gave the country the most sweeping tax increase in history, affecting every single American and fundamentally changing every paycheck in the country. The warm fuzzy of universal healthcare will give way to the cold grey light of how the hell do we afford this real soon. Obama better hope nobody realizes that before November. |
