CB does t have range and will be jammed with people. Good for a small radius around your unit. But not suitable for private, two way comms.

HAM is next but very easy to track location and all talk is public. It is easily jammed. Furthermore getting a license entitles the gov to randomly check your equipment as in, enter your house without a warrant. It is also illegal to use any kind of code over HAM.

Mesh is interesting bit text only, very limited range and requires you to scatter mesh units across the land for any distance. You would need solar power and they are easy to dismantle and jam.

Cell phones are worthless.

Military field phones are secure but require wires. Good for coordinating soldiers in a specific area but impractical due to wire.

Landlines might work but nobody has the. And they can also be tapped.

The problem isn’t comms options. It’s finding secure comms that have range that some entity cannot “turn off” or jam.

Trunking digital radio (like the police) is expensive.

Satellite phones are a possibility but expensive. Hard to equip a lot of people with them. Entities can also block Sat phones due to agreements with Sat companies so they can keep their license.

In short, big problem.

I believe scrambling signals is also illegal. Although in a true SHTF one likely wouldn’t be too concerned about licenses and legalities.

If you goat ****ers don’t get the need for private, secure comms you ain’t paying attention.

I also suggest you get out and train on your weapon platforms of choice and form informal groups of like minded people who are prepared, equipped, trained and ready to protect your family, community and neighborhood. And if it comes down to it, the Constitution.

My shooting club requires body armor, ballistic helmets and IFAK plus seven rifle mags, 5 pistol mags, water, radio, and NODS. Our trainers are Israeli Special Forces and Army trainers. We bring in specialized trainers for scenario based work. Shooting from vehicles, counter kidnapping, survival and bushcraft.

This is Texas. FAFO state.

Note: we are not a militia, not anti government, pro police and have members of all races and persuasions but with a common goal to stay in an operational readiness state to protect and serve our families, neighbors and communities in disasters or emergencies.

Many of us are certified FEMA first responders. My son just got certified in cave rescue (which also works for collapsed strictures). I’m FEMA ICS-003 (this means local LE can’t remove me from a scene because I’m Federal.) and TCCC certified. I’m also close to getting certified for third party protection.

And at this point IDGAF who knows it. I’ve got six years of training and shoot 98 rifle and 96 pistol with iron sights. I know how to work with a team, use cover and concealment, clear buildings and other stuff.

It’s been a great way to keep in shape and have people who will respond immediately without question if they are needed.
