Default my old Racine power hacksaw works great (video)

I purchased a "vintage" power hacksaw off Craigslist a couple weeks ago, installed a vintage Wagner motor and made a new mounting plate for it.
https://www.thevettebarn.com/forums/o...w-morning.html

Today I cut some metal with it, it works great

Very cool. How large a piece of stock will it cut?

Probably about 6" square. I'll see how far the vise opens tomorrow. It uses a 14" blade.

edit
Saw I had this picture of the vise open

I would have guessed 6" based on the blade movement, but it is a little tough to really tell from a video. I love older machines like that, built to last several lifetimes. Congrats on a great addition to your shop

I'll clean it up but I think it's the original paint. It's "earned" those work clothes.

Very cool Jeff.
Do you have a practical use for it?

I make parts for Cub Cadets and Kawasaki Triples so yes, it will be used

Kawasaki Triple exhaust spigots ( five sets of three each ) at the bottom left

That's just a few of the pieces I make

Is it just the weight of the saw assembly that provides the downward force for cutting?

Back in the early 60's, we had one of those in our high school auto shop for
cutting all sorts of pipe, bar stock for hot rod projects. Same model. It always
was amazing to watch it tirelessly cut the thickest pieces.

What a great find!

The weight above the moving hacksaw blade frame puts weight on the blade as it cuts. More to the left increases pressure, more to the right decreases cutting pressure. There is a ratchet mechanism that lifts the blade on the non cutting stroke.

I'm an excellent fabricator but my painting skills are a bit "lacking". All my work goes out bare metal.

Just talked with the guy I purchased the saw from. I had called him Saturday and although it went to voicemail, I started the motor and had it start cutting.

He was glad I got it running and will be using it. He also let me know that if it didn't sell, it was going to be scrapped

I immediately asked about the Walker Turner bench top drill press he had and he agreed to sell that to me. I'll be picking that up in a couple weeks as next weekend is full.

I love to see badass machinery like this find a good home.

Other than being a tough sumbitch, what advantages would this saw have over a newer band saw? Cheaper blades? Precision? Brute cutting force?

Just curious.

To get the same size current manufacture bandsaw, I'd be looking at least $500 if not much more. A power hacksaw isn't known for it's speed in cutting but for it's accuracy. They are also excellent for cutting tougher materials due to lower blade speeds.

Plus it's just cool to watch
