Default Well, crap...

Power went out a few minutes ago. Took the dogs out for a walk. While outside, saw the lights try to come back on, and the sky light up at the same time. This happened thrice in the space of a couple of minutes. Might be without power for a while.

My neighbor bought one after Ike. It was supposed to come on and run once a week, automatically just to keep everything up to snuff. It never worked right, ran through batteries, and finally my neighbor just said screw it and let it sit. He died, and the new owner sold it and the transfer box. Power outages are a rarity for us. Since Ike, I can only remember one outage, a truck hit a power pole a couple of miles away. We were down for just long enough to drag out the generator, then have to put it away when the lights cam on again.

For people in cold climates where you might actually freeze to death, though, I think it would be worth it And maybe a battery desulfator would have worked on the generator batteries, too!

We've got a 37K generator in the ice cream truck. We had planned on putting in a patch panel in the house, but haven't yet. Might go to Lowe's tomorrow and see about having a Generac installed.

Best of luck. Try getting a portable generator and have a transfer box put in. It will at least keep the heat on and keep the internet foing.

Our house has a Generac whole house generator installed by previous owner. We have it set to kick on every Wednesday to run and charge the battery. Last weekend a transformer blew and our neighborhood was without power for about five hours. Generator powered up after one minute outage
We do have it serviced every year

Our neighbors across the street built their house just after we bought ours. They had a whole house generator installed as part of the build.

Last year I bought a little Honda EU2000 generator. Small, lightweight (my wife can lift it into the trunk of the car) and very quiet. It's enough to run my kitchen fridge, upright freezer, TVs and some lights, and probably more. It won't run anything 220, like air cond or range. I paid $725 on Craigslist and it is like new. Lowe's want $1,150 new.

I got a 10k with12k surge. It kept all the majors systems in our NH house foing (Heat, water pump, lights).

If we would have stayed up north we would have gotten a whole house gen simply becuase it would be good in the winter so if we were away the pipes would not freeze

3 times means a recloser. That means either a tree on a line or a varmit. Should be quick to fix.

Yeah, weather can hit triple digits here in the summer, but not as extreme as up north in the winter. If it got that bad, I would just go visit some relatives or go to Reno for awhile. Retired, so nothing keeping us here. We were in Las Vegas the last time the power was out. Bottom line is the weather here is never life threatening.
